Walter J. Saffo

Mr. Walter J. Saffo died July 7. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Saffo, he was born in 1930 in Conyers. He grew up in Rockdale and Newton counties and attended Washington Street High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Borne Division as a paratrooper during the Korean conflict. He married Ms. Georgia Grace Zackery and moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked at General Motors Corporation as a machine operator. There he raised his family. He was a man of few words and clear discipline with his children. In 1989 he married Ms. Lucy Mae Cooksey. They resided in White Plains and joined the House of God Church where he was an active member. He was loved by his family and friends.

Surviving are wife Mrs. Lucy Mae Saffo; former wife Mrs. Georgia Grace Saffo; children the Rev. and Mrs. Reginald (Karen) Saffo, Mr. and Mrs. Marcus (Marcie) Saffo, the Rev. and Mrs. Gerald (Debra) Saffo, Mr. and Mrs. Dana (Sarene) Saffo, Mr. and Mrs. DL (Angela) Daniel, Mr. and Mrs. Darryl (Diana) Shropshire; grandchildren Dawn, Sherece, Jevon, Tanya, Rashad, Marcus II, Kendra Maurice, Nijya, Dana Jr., DeVonte, Khari, Darron, Devin, Aliyah; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Ms. Annie Grace Saffo; brothers Mr. and Mrs. Sam (Ruby) Saffo, Mr. Robert L. Saffo; sisters-in-law Ms. Hattie Saffo, Mrs. Archie Mae Cookesy; brother-in-law Mr. Walter Cookesy; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held at noon July 13 at Mt. Zion First Baptist Church, Oxford, with Bishop A.H. Nolley officiating. Interment followed at Oxford Historical Cemetery.
