COVINGTON - On Wednesday, the Alcovy and Newton tennis squads split a pair of crosstown tennis matches at Newton High School.
In boys action, the Tigers handed Newton a 5-0 sweep. On the flip side, the Lady Rams got the better of Alcovy with an impressive 5-0 victory.
"We were outplayed by Alcovy," said Newton boys coach Andrew Clink. "The doubles teams were outplayed at the net, and our singles players committed too many unforced errors."
In the first match, Alcovy's Kyle Jackson got things started by defeating Tyler Gose, 8-3.
In number two singles, Brandon Tisdale edged Mark DeAlva, 9-7.
Closing out the win for the Tigers with the third victory of the day was Zach Bowers, who won, 8-3, over Bryant Miller.
Not satisfied with just one win, the Tigers took to the court in doubles action anxious to complete the sweep and earn bragging rights with another victory over the Rams.
In number one doubles, Aarron Fowler and Michael Hilderbrand handed Donnavon White and Ayile Baxter an 8-2 loss. Miguel Wood and Conner Avery topped Adam Page and Miles George, 8-1, sealing the deal for the Tigers.
"We only have one more meet and then it's the regional tournament," Clink said. "I hope the guys will be playing their best tennis by the time the regional tournament begins."
In girls action, Kierstie Moon beat Reagan Bowers, 8-2, in number one singles.
"We were in full force today," said Newton girls coach Jackie Mattison. "Last week we had to rearrange the lineup, and today the girls did exactly what they needed to do."
In number two singles, Erin Lewis-Faupel won, 8-0, over Kimberly Rary. Finishing off the singles sweep was Ashley Gunter, with an 8-0 win over Alora Fuller.
In doubles play, Newton's number one team of Holly Springer and Stephanie Cronan won, 8-2, over Mary Wright and Ashley Alvarez.
The last match of the afternoon was played by Newton's number two doubles team Rhiannon Long and Courtney Reagan, who completed the sweep for the Lady Rams with a win over Cassie Turner and Jordan Shull.
"We had some injuries and were not able to play our normal lineup," said Alcovy girls coach Marcia Watkins. "We are trying to focus on the region tournament and tweak our lineup for this."
