New bakery sweetens up Covington

A new bakery selling sweet treats and cakes for all occasions has opened up in downtown Covington.

Luv Cakes, 1109 Reynolds Street across the street from Mayfield Ace Hardware's back entrance, has been open for two months. Owner Judy Harmon, who has a background as an accountant, said she decided to open a bakery after baking recreationally for years.

"I was just getting burned out on that so I decided to do this," said Harmon who is a completely self-taught baker. "This is fun. This is a challenge."

A testament to her skill as a cake decorator is a cake on display ingeniously decorated as a shiht-zu puppy with mountains of white icing spread out to resemble fur, a red icing tongue and black jelly beans for eyes.

Cheerily painted in pink and green with large polka dots, the bakery has a welcoming atmosphere. Whether stopping in for a quick treat on your lunch break or there to place an order for a wedding cake, customers will feel comfortable at Luv Cakes.

Also for sale are delicately decorated petit fours, thumbprint cookies, turtle thumbprints, blondie brownies, cheesecake brownies and cupcakes.

Thumbprint cookies are $4.99 a dozen and turtle thumbprints are $5.99 a dozen.

Petit fours are $1.25 a piece, blondies and cupcakes are $1 and cheesecake brownies are $1.50.

Sheet cakes sized to serve 16 to 20 people are $27.99. Cakes sized to serve 30 to 35 people are $31.99 and sheet cakes sized to serve 45 to 50 people are $36.99. Prices for shaped cakes such as the Shih Tzu cake vary according to the complexity of the decorating design.

With Valentine's Day in the air, many of the goodies on display are decorated red and pink. Harmon said she plans on baking more heart-shaped sweets for the season and will also have special gift boxes customers can have prepared for their loved ones.

Harmon asks for at least a month's notice for wedding and specialty cake orders. Two to three days notice is also asked for large catering orders.

Luv Cakes can be reached at (770) 508-8305. They are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday
