Mattie Belle Lackey Jeffries

Mrs. Mattie Belle lackey Jeffries died Aug. 6. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Howard (Maggie) Lackey in 1936 in Covington. She attended Leguin School and graduated from R. L. Cousins School in 1955. She joined Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and loved going to church. After marrying Mr. Thurman Wade Jeffries, she moved to Detroit. Returning to Covington after 25 years, she joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Mother Board until her health failed. Mrs. Jeffries was preceded in death by her husband, sister Ms. Mary Lackey Terrell and brothers Ulysses, Eugene and Clifford Lackey.

Surviving are daughters Mrs. Pamela Lackey Harris, Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Maxine) Gaither, Mr. and Mrs. Tremain (Sherrie) Johnson, all of Covington, Ms. Aleatha Jeffries, Mr. and Mrs. Carlton (Tamika) Rule, all of Detroit; son Mr. and Mrs. Keith (Valerie) Jeffries of Detroit; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters Mrs. Rosa Mae Brown of Boston, Mrs. Lucille Brinkley of Madison, Ms. Annie Ruth Lackey of New York, Ms. Mildred lackey and Ms. Diana Lackey of Covington; brothers Mr. and Mrs. James (Essie Kate) Lackey, Mr. Willie Lackey of Covington; sisters-in-law Mrs. Mary Lackey of Covington, Mrs. Elise Jones of Covington; brother-in-law Mr. W.T. Jeffries of Monticello; a host of special nieces, nephews and friends; very special friend Mrs. Ruby Lee Barr.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Aug. 12 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Bishop Milton Holston officiating. Interment followed at Lackey Family Cemetery.
