A Covington man was arrested and charged with murder Saturday evening after allegedly shooting and killing his stepfather following a domestic dispute, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

Christopher N. Masiello, 30, was charged with murder, aggravated assault, firearm discharge while under the influence of alcohol and firearm or knife possession during a crime, according to a NCSO incident report.

Masiello allegedly became embroiled in an argument with stepfather Paul Larson, 56, shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday. According to reports, Masiello was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana when he shot Larson several times. A family member called the authorities, but the victim was dead from his wounds by time medical first responders arrived, according to the incident report. Masiello was arrested at the scene of the crime.

Investigations are still ongoing and the cause of the dispute is not known, according to Capt. Doug Kitchens of the Criminal Investigations Division of the NCSO.

Larson and Masiello reportedly had disagreements in the past but had been getting along recently, said Kitchens.

Masiello had several previous run-ins with the law, according to the NCSO. He was arrested in 2003 for public drunkenness and, in March of 2006, was arrested and charged with arson, battery, criminal damage to property, criminal activity and theft, interference with government property, obstruction and assault.  He was bonded out after three days.
