Armed robbers ambushed a group of Newton County residents late Saturday night, threatening them at gunpoint before making off with purses and computer equipment, according to a Newton County Sheriff's Office report.

The group of three women and one man were returning from work around 11:40 p.m. and had just reached their doorstep at Leaf Stone Apartments when two young black males jumped up from behind the bushes, brandishing a black gun and a silver gun.

The perpetrators were described as being in their early 20s with one wearing a baseball cap and the other wearing hooded sweatshirt.

One of the victims said the walkway around their apartment was poorly lit and located next to an area of thick bushes and underbrush. The two men were apparently waiting for the group.

"When they jumped out we got so scared. I was screaming so hard, they told me to 'shut up and be quiet or I'll shoot you,'" she said.

Despite the noise, she said none of her neighbors appeared or came out, even afterward.

"Normally, there's a whole bunch of teenagers up there. But that night, nobody was out there," she said. "Nobody came out. It was really spooky."

According to the report, the robbers demanded the group's laptop computers and purses and then fled on foot. Deputies searched the area after responding to the 911 call and posted a lookout description but nothing was found.

The 23-year-old victim said she moved out of the apartment immediately the next day.

"I'm just scared. I can't stay there no more," she said. "I guess it's what you call PTSD [post traumatic stress syndrome]. I'm scared it's going to happen to me again."

She paused. "I hope that never happens to me again."
