Only 10 minutes of the game may have been played, but emotions were already running high during host team Newton County's first round game against team Georgia.

Pregame festivities included the family of Jake Hewell, for whom the 2008 Dixie Boys World Series was dedicated.

Jake's brother, Conner Hewell, threw out the first pitch of a game that was suspended due to inclement weather.

As of press time, the Newton County All Stars trailed Georgia 2-0 after only playing 1/3 of the first half of the first inning.

Teams were sent back to the host hotel an hour after the field was initially cleared because of lightning.

According to Dixie Boys officials, teams were to report back at 9 p.m. for the final word on when the game would be finished.

Wasting no time

Before teams were cleared from the playing field, team Georgia wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.

Georgia's third batter, Will Price, sent a high-powered line drive well over the centerfield fence for a two-run homer, which put his team up 2-0.

Price's home run followed a single from Michael Taylor.

The other 7 p.m. game between Alabama and Virginia had not started at the time of the weather suspension.
