Hale close to setting Stratford season records

Covington resident and former Eastside standout Blake Hale is closing in on some major single-season records held at Stratford Academy.

Hale, a senior wide receiver for the Eagles, is approaching such records that include most touchdown receptions (9) and best average per reception (28.33).

Entering the week, Hale was ranked among the top five receivers in Class AAA with 8 touchdowns, 24 receptions and 430 receiving yards. In addition, he is averaging 17.9 yards per catch.

"Oh, of course," replied Hale regarding whether or not he thinks about the records. "But I'm a little nervous about just playing the best that I can in the time I still have left more than anything else."

Stratford has one more regular season game this year.

Based on his abilities, Hale has become a target; therefore, double and triple coverage each night is not a surprise. Nevertheless, Hale is content with that because he understands it's just part of the game.

"It's great because it leaves a lot of other wide receivers open and gives them more opportunities," said Hale. "Other guys have stepped up and made some big plays for us."

On the other side of the ball, Hale has three interceptions - all in one game against Sherwood Christian - as a defensive back for the Eagles.

Hale was a member of the Eastside program from his freshman through junior years. He opted to transfer to Stratford, where he attended kindergarten through eighth grade, after deciding it would be a better opportunity for him as not just an athlete but a student, as well.

His mother, Susan, has been very supportive throughout his career, allowing him the opportunity to attend Stratford.

As a result, Hale has filled in nicely for Ross Rabun, who graduated and was Stratford's leading receiver in 2006. Currently, Rabun is fourth all-time in touchdown receptions (6), second in receptions (41) and third in receiving yards (593) for a single season.

"The best thing about playing for this team is the opportunity and the guys I've played with throughout my whole life," said Hale. "The team chemistry and trust is great; it's amazing."
