One Newton County grandmother will not be winning awards for grandparent of the year after she was arrested following an altercation that left her 15-year-old grandson slashed twice on the arm, while two other children (ages 2 and 12) watched.
According to reports from the Newton County Sheriff's Department, deputies were called to a home on Shoals Creek Road in reference to a family fight. When they arrived they found three juveniles and 53-year-old Jennifer Crutchfield, grandmother to at least one of the children.
According to reports, an argument between Crutchfield and her 15-year old grandson began when she asked him for the location of a glass ashtray. It is unclear why the fight escalated the way it did, but according to reports, the juvenile said that Crutchfield came into the bathroom while he was in there and kicked him, and at that time he grabbed her arms.
The fight continued into the kitchen of the residence, which is where the juvenile's grandmother allegedly grabbed a knife and cut him twice on the arm. The teenager also suffered from other lacerations, allegedly at her hands. In the kitchen a 12-year-old and a two-year-old witnessed the altercation between grandmother and grandson.
Crutchfield was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree and simple battery. The 15-year-old juvenile was also arrested and charged with simple battery.
