COVINGTON - On Monday night, the Eastside High baseball team played its last home game of the season. Drawing Heritage High, the senior Eagles were in for a long goodbye.

After losing back-to-back games last week for the first time all season, the Patriots (21-4 overall, 21-2 Region 8-AAAA) looked to enact revenge, and that's exactly what they did, winning 6-0 to clinch the region championship.

Heritage ace pitcher Tyler Austin got it done on both sides of the diamond, shutting out the Eagles (7-18, 7-16) by allowing just four hits while belting two home runs from the plate.

Pitching very solid was Eastside's Cameron Davenport, who allowed five runs on seven hits against the league's top team. But without generating any type of offense, the Eagles were blanked for the third time this season.

Committing three errors on the night, the Eagles let a potential upset slip away as the Patriots scored a run in every inning but the sixth.

"We gave them a couple of runs," said Eastside coach Michael Poor. "We needed to just play and make them earn their runs, (but) we made errors and didn't make them earn what they were supposed to."

Austin hit his first homer of the night in the first inning off Davenport to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Heritage played small ball, scoring with a squeeze bunt by Elliott Walker. Staying consistent with their scoring, the Patriots added another run in the third after a throwing error by Hunter Parker allowed Antonio Crawford to come in for the 3-0 lead.

After shutting out the Patriots in the fourth inning, Eastside's Kyle Durand drew a walk, followed by a double off the bat of Git Aiken to put runners in scoring position for the first time all night. After walking Davenport, Austin got out of the bases loaded jam.

In the fifth, the Patriots got back to business after Joseph Lester scored on an error by shortstop Jake Casteel. They scored again in the sixth after catcher Nate Harvil committed the Eagles' third throwing error, this time chucking the ball into left field during a stolen base attempt.

Eastside reliever Timothy Roton tried to stop the bleeding in the seventh; however, Austin deposited his second bomb of the night to seal the victory.

In a game where there weren't many highlights for the Eagles, centerfielder Jared Trust, who has a .500 on-base percentage and .350 batting average, had two of their four hits.

"I was seeing the ball well," Trust said. "We had opportunities, but couldn't put anything together."

Eastside next visits Salem at 5:30 p.m. today.
