Bodybuilding 101

If you took just one look at Olympic events this past week, you probably saw some pretty healthy looking athletes. Most likely, this was the result of many factors: youth, dedication, state of the art training and loads of encouragement.

Cameras and commentators shared their view of leading Olympians' strengths, obstacles and competitors. Again and again, the athletes' physical and emotional status was reported. One pulled muscle, one sprained wrist or one grieving heart could have caused an Olympic hopeful to go home empty handed.

No matter what event, the participants' mental and physical health was critical to success. I started thinking about how this relates to the body of Christ. St. Paul used the analogy of the body to the community of believers.

"The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ" (NIV 1 Cor 12:).

I believe that Paul wanted us to realize the integral part each of us play in God's plan. If we work toward encouraging each other, strengthening each other and working together, we can do so much good for God.

Sometimes, like the competitive athlete, we grow restless, overwhelmed or even disappointed. Our choices affect more than the people in our immediate circle. Our actions can cause a mountain of grace or a landslide of catastrophes.

"Dear Lord,

Thank you for reminding us that you have called us into community. You have gently led us to walk together as we help you build up the kingdom. Please give us strength and wisdom as we continue our journey toward you. Amen."
