Police discovered the body of a middle-aged woman Tuesday morning on the shores of Jackson Lake in southern Newton County.

Newton County Sheriff's Lt. Bill Watterson said the body of the 58-year-old white woman was discovered at approximately 9:15 a.m. by a Walker Harris Marina property caretaker. The woman's name is being withheld until her family can be notified.

The NCSO received a call for a missing person on Lang Road earlier in the morning, Watterson said, but the body was located while responding to the call. The body was then sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation' crime lab in DeKalb County where an autopsy was preformed.

Investigators are currently waiting to receive the final medical report, but early indications suggest the woman died of natural causes. Watterson said there were no apparent injuries to the body and they had no reason to suspect foul play at this time.

"We are still waiting on word from some of the tests," Watterson said. "Some tests, like a toxicology report, will take longer than others."

Watterson said the woman was last seen alive by her roommate around 7 p.m. Monday night. When the roommate woke up Tuesday morning, the woman was missing from the house.

The woman was found on the banks of Jackson Lake just off Lang Road.

The Newton County Fire Department and the Newton County Coroner's Office assisted investigators with retrieving the body.
