Eastside head basketball coach Michael Gerald kicked off his annual boys youth basketball camp on Monday, which will continue until Friday.

"It's going very well so far," said Gerald regarding the first two days of camp. "The kids are excited, and I'm pleased with the overall turnout."

On Tuesday afternoon, the camp attendees were being educated on the art of basketball screens, including how to read and set them, as well as what constitutes as an illegal screen and what does not. Gerald stressed that the importance of screens is to get a teammate open for a shot.

"This is called the pick and pop," instructed Gerald to his group of approximately 25 basketball players, as he explained a unique version of the classic pick and roll maneuver. Rather than continuing toward the basket, the player setting the pick "rolls" to an open spot on the court to collect a pass from the ball-handler, who then "pops" a basic jump shot.

Alongside Gerald, his assistant coaches - Trent Weiser and Rochone Dilligard - have also helped with the event. In addition, Gerald's varsity and junior varsity Eagles have been assisting with the camp.

The clinic is a five-day, six-hour event held at the Eastside High School gymnasium.
