Covington Housing Authority director resigns

/

Greg Williams

Executive Director of the Housing Authority of the City of Covington Greg Williams tendered his resignation Tuesday night effective 30 days from then, Landis Stephens chairman of the housing authority’s board of commissioners told The Covington News.

“It was a mutual decision,” Williams said. “We’ve parted with no hard feelings.”

Williams had been with the housing authority for seven years.

Stephens said the housing authority did not have any initial plans to replace Williams or who will serve in the position in the interim, but it is prepared to move forward. A nationwide search will be conducted to find Williams' replacement.

Stephens said the housing authority strives to be a transparent organization and he encouraged anyone with questions to contact him directly.

The news of Williams’ resignation comes in the midst of an investigation into the housing authority’s financial department.

The housing authority initiated an audit of its financial department after a theft by an employee was suspected. Williams filed a report with the Covington Police Department (CPD) Oct. 26 stating the alleged theft occurred between January 2015 and September 2016.

The amount of missing funds had not been determined, according to the CPD report. The forensic audit, conducted by Yeager & Boyd, an accounting firm out of Birmingham, Alabama, was initiated to determine an exact total.

The report from Yeager & Boyd will be released to the public Feb. 9.
