UPDATE, 8:40 a.m. - Covington Police Department (CPD) is actively working a shooting incident in the Bank of North Georgia parking lot at the intersection of Highway 278 and Pace Street near Kroger this morning .

CPD Captain Philip Bradford told The Covington News on scene the incident started on Highway 36 with reports of a white SUV traveling at a high rate of speed.

CPD pursued the vehicle and initiated blue lights to attempt a traffic stop, but the vehicle “took off,” Bradford said.

“Anywhere there’s trouble we won’t chase,” Bradford said. “Like, if he’s going on to the square, people could be walking or something, so they (CPD) backed off.”

The SUV continued down Pace Street and Bradford said he suspected the driver – identified as a white male from out of town – ran the red light at Highway 278 and got into a wreck at the intersection with a blue SUV.

The driver of the white SUV then proceeded to get out of his car and run through the Kroger shopping center parking lot.

Then, Bradford said, a driver of a red pickup truck – identified as a local white male – that witnessed the wreck at the intersection attempted to follow the runaway driver.

“He’s going to chase him, he’s going to catch him for the police,” Bradford said. “I guess, I don’t know if he saw the police or what.”

Bradford said the driver of the red truck, pulled in, cut off the runaway, got out of his truck and shot the runaway.

“One shot was fired and it was a small-caliber handgun,” Bradford said.

Bradford said CPD officers were in the area and close to the accident when it happened.

The driver of the white SUV was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and is in critical condition, Bradford said. He said at the time he did not know why the man was running from the police.

The driver of the red truck has been arrested.

He did what cpd didn't do.What if he stopped this guy from taking Kroger hostage ?.can you really think of what could have happened if the red truck driver didn't step in? it could have been bad, maybe the driver of the red truck was prior military? because we are sworn to protect our citizens from foreign and domestic enemies and in his eyes he was doing his job.
