COVINGTON, Ga. - Trees are coming down to make way for the $19.3 million project on Highway 278 in Covington.

Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) District Two Communications Specialist Kyle Collins said the project consists of the widening and reconstruction of Hwy-278 from mile 7.97 to 10.43.

“The roadway will consist of two 12-foot lanes in each direction separated by a 24-food raised grassed median with 10-foot rural shoulders of which 6.5-foot is paved,” he said.

Also included in the project, he said, is a round-a-bout at the intersection of State Route (SR) 12 and SR-142. A traffic signal will also be installed at the intersection of SR-12 and Elks Club Road.

The scheduled completion date is May 31, 2020, he said. The work is being completed by E.R. Snell Contractor Inc.

SR12 is US 278, so do not try to protect the incompetent GDOT wasting our tax money. Why are you not asking how much did they waste on the widening and reconfiguring of that intersection completed late last year. This tabloid is nothing but a promoter of the government.

3 years to widen 2 1/2 miles of road and build a roundabout....you gotta be kidding me. I could have taken my 50 year old Tonka Truck toy set and a bunch of 8 year olds and do it quicker than that. Oh, don't worry about harassing the local commuters for 3 years....if they can tear down and rebuild 300 feet of I-85 bridges in 3 months surely they can get a contractor than can do better in completing this project in 3 years.....or there "other" factors in play, just wondering about some ineptness in local or state, as it might be, road construction/or the people guiding them??
