No taxation without representation Dear Editor: I was very interested in the information contained in the March 3rd article "City residents question electric rates, system." Now I understand from the mayor's own statement that our higher than normal electric rates are being used to subsidize lower city property taxes. There is a very basic problem with that process. A large percentage of Covington Electric customers do not live in the city limits of Covington. I live about 5 miles ... |

The sounds of love Dear Editor: The Church at Covington did, indeed, ring with the sounds of love and praise at the FaithWorks' benefit, Sing-A-Song of Love, on Friday night, Feb. 26. Choir members and performers from the churches and community came together to raise funds for our ministry to those needing rent or utility assistance in Newton County. Admission was free, but generous hearts contributed over $4,600 in offerings taken that night. We could never have imagined such ... |

Everyday heroes Dear Editor: I want to thank the sheriff's department, fire department, ambulance staff, and wrecker services that came to our aid on a cold, rainy Tuesday night, March 2, at the accident on Hazelbrand Road at the eastbound entrance ramp of Interstate 20 at approximately 8 p.m. Your response was swift. I am grateful no one was injured, but I am glad you all were there to help. |

|
Speak up Dear Editor: I am deeply saddened by the Covington City Council decision not to pursue a grant to create a multi-use trail along the abandoned Norfolk Southern Railroad. One continuous complaint by Newton County and Covington officials is that Newton County residents go elsewhere to spend their money, robbing the city and county of sales tax dollars spent in neighboring counties. Well, the reason people go elsewhere is because our representatives keep passing up great ... |

Not even coffee Dear Editor: Mr. [Earnest] Simmons has it wrong. Elected officials and government employees should never even take a cup of coffee from anyone whom they are doing business with as a government official. Our elected officials volunteer to serve. If they are looking for a free meal, then [they need to] resign or not run again. |

Community that cares Dear Editor: On Monday, Jan. 25, what a parent hopes and prays to be a normal, regular, safe day at school turned out to be one of the scariest days of our family's life. Our son, James P. Norrington, a 17-year-old student at Newton High School, entered his third block class and stated to his teacher that he didn't feel good; the teacher told him to go to the clinic and see the nurse but ... |

Greatest little town Dear Editor: Dear Social Circle Planning & Zoning Committee Members: I would like to thank each of you for your dedication to the city of Social Circle. I know each of you love and care for Social Circle; otherwise you would not volunteer your time and knowledge for a sometimes thankless job. I know the past several months have been tiresome at times, and I applaud you for your willingness to hear from everyone who ... |

Letter to the editor...Make your voices heard Dear Editor: This letter is to all bus drivers, janitors, cafeteria workers and their families of [the] Newton County School System. The school board will soon decide the calendar for next school year. If the board chooses either the 169-day year or the four-day week, then the lowest paid employees will take a significant pay cut of up to 20 percent. You must take action by taking the survey on the school ... |

Letter to the editor...Just say no! Dear Editor: Chairperson [Kathy] Morgan made a deal with the Board [of Commissioners] upon entering office to receive $6,000 per year for automobile expenses. |

Letters to the editor - Gracious host Dear Editor: Please allow me to thank State Senator John Douglas for visiting with my boys and me at the Capitol Thursday. He made it one of the most extraordinary days I have ever spent with my children. |

Letters to the editor - Resurrected Dear Editor: The Health Care Reform Bill is back. That is that Obama is trying to get it passed again. He said at the State of the Union that he would like to work with the Republican and Democrats. Well, that is what he said. He is having a meeting with Republican and Democrats this Thursday to talk about what will be in the bill, but Obama will be putting out what he will ... |

Letters to the editor - Welcome to the 21st Century Dear Editor: I wholeheartedly agree with the city of Covington Planning Commissions recommendation that we beginning using 21st century software in Newton County to track important Planning and Zoning information. |

Letters to the editor - Standing ovation Dear Editor: Bravo to Jennifer Long and the Covington News for the Jan. 6 and Jan. 24 stories celebrating the success of students from Social Circle Theater at the 2010 Junior Theater Festival ("Bright lights, big city" and "Students from Social Circle Theater win outstanding production award"). |

Letters to the editor - No wonder Dear Editor: Please allow me to briefly comment on a front page news story titled "Shelter finally signs lease with housing authority" in the Feb. 5 edition. |

Care and committment Dear Editor: It was a rainy Tuesday. The office was full of patients when the cries of panic came. "Patient down, come quick." "We need Dr. Carter's help." I offered my assistance. I knew my role would be limited, but I was willing to help. What came next was nothing less than a miracle. I traveled down the stairs and looked through the glass. I saw Dr. Carter on his hands and knees, in the ... |

Letters to the editor - Too Close to Home Dear Editor: My family is very opposed to the drag strip that is to be built in Social Circle because the location surrounds many residents. I have read several comments in newspapers from people who live close to existing drag strips. People state they live three, four, or five miles away. Mind you, they say miles. Not once have I read, heard, or know of anyone whose kitchen table is within 100 feet ... |

Letters to the editor - The Wrong Direction Dear Editor: I am compelled to offer my views on the proposed “Motor Sports Complex” (Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Something like lipstick on a DRAGSTRIP) being proposed in Social Circle. |

Rob not the poor Dear Editor: Please allow me to comment further on the very good letter written by Ms. Sara Matthews that was printed in your Friday, Jan. 29 edition. |

Upset about CAC Dear Editor: After reading the story about the Covington Athletic Club in The News dated Feb. 7, there was no way that I could not respond. As a member of that club for 15 years, it was indeed like a place where you felt like family when you entered, with a staff that was the greatest and the friends that were made there were priceless. |

Examples of civility Dear Editor: I have grown weary of the tenor of political debate on the airways, the internet, and in print. The "silent majority" remains silent because they don't want to be drawn into the ugliness of the current climate of "conversation." As the saying goes, "don't wrestle with a pig, because you both get dirty and the pig likes it." |

Can someone explain? Dear Editor: I have not lived in Newton County very long. I moved here last year to be closer to my daughter and grandchildren. I do not understand the manner in which the city of Covington and Newton County decides how tax money is to be spent. |

Not a podunk area Dear Editor: I am writing concerning the proposed drag strip which if built at the juncture of I-20 and Highway 278 would be less than three miles from my home on Cannon Drive in Social Circle. |

|
Letter to the editor - Point of no return Dear Editor: Make no mistake about it, in my opinion, vehicles that race on drag strips are designed and built to do two things: they make an incredible amount of noise and they go extraordinarily fast. Pertaining to drag racing, speed and noise go hand in hand. You do not have one without the other. Regardless of how many noise engineers are consulted and no matter how you spin it, drag ... |

Letter to the editor - Senseless coverage Dear Editor: The article you printed Friday, Jan. 14 on the front page, "Members of Judges’s Family Sentenced in 2008 Fight," was totally unnecessary. Why humiliate individuals again, more than a year later? Yes, what happened last December was not appropriate behavior, but that was last year. Why reprint a detailed summary on the front page with pictures. This is old news. What purpose did it serve? If you thought it ... |

Letter to the editor... Congrats KCNB Dear Editor: I just finished reading the KCNB supplement in Sunday’s Covington News. Wow, what an outstanding organization. I particularly enjoyed the older photographs. Clearly, KCNB has been ahead of its time for many years. |

Letter to the editor... Genuine motives Dear Editor: In this era we live in, almost everything is built on the foundation and the focus of commerce or monetary gain. Unfortunately, our churches are not exonerated from this. It has been my observation that many of the churches that exist in today’s society are more concerned with an increase in numbers or members and prosperity. The aspiration to become mega-churches has led many of our religious associations to ... |

Same Sex Marriage Dear Editor: This week in California they are in court over same-sex marriage. The people of California voted no in 2008 on same-sex marriage in California, but now same-sex marriage advocates are back in federal court today to try and say that it is unconstitutional. They may make it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and the court may over turn the vote of the people of that state. If the U.S. Supreme ... |

There's a difference Dear Editor: I would like to comment on a letter from Linda Cooper that was in the 1-13-2010 edition of The Covington News. I do agree with her about people who would dump their animals like trash, not caring what happens to them. We have had more than our share dumped out here too. She is not alone in thinking that the Humane Society and Animal Control are one and the same. I am a ... |

Spend-happy Dear Editor: What do the County Commissioners, Obama, Congress and Nancy Pelosi have in common? Spend, spend, spend. |

Recording the past Dear Editor: Gen. Ray Davis (MOH) Detachment 1188 of Covington, Georgia, will be videoing all (not just League members) Marines who wish to tell their stories of their time in the Corps. Too many Marines take their stories to the grave and that piece of history is lost forever. We think that is a shame. The format will be a round-table discussion where one Marine’s story ... |

New Dragstrip Dear Editor: I live in Social Circle, and I have read the article produced by the CCoSC. These are long time residence who fear change but want everyone to change and be like them. I feel differently about the proposed plan, and think it’s a wonderful opportunity for our businesses in Social Circle. We need revenue to fund our schools, roads, etc., that has to be paid for by our city. The ... |

What a drag Dear Editor: Hundreds of Newton County homeowners have Social Circle mailing addresses, but no Social Circle vote. We, like our friends within the city limits, would be harmed if the mayor and city council permit a drag strip to be built within the recently expanded city limits. |

Not inhumane Dear Editor: After reading Linda Cooper’s letter about finding puppies and not receiving any help from the Humane Society I had to think for a minute. |

Kudos to Marilyn Dear Editor: Kudos are due for Marilyn in our Newton County Tax Commissioner’s Office. |

Letter to the editor - Lack of help Dear Editor: A week before Christmas, someone dumped seven Lab pups at the end of the dirt road on Robertson Road in Newborn. First of all, shame on the person who did this. If I had not came along, they would have died in the cold. They left them in an area that has no houses or shelter and has coyotes, wild animals, etc. |

Letter to the editor - Double standard Dear Editor: There is a double standard in Washington D.C. The double standard is that Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said in a book that Obama is "light skinned" and "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." If that is not racist, I do not know what is, and Reid’s not having to step down from being Senate Majority Leader is a double standard when Sen. ... |

Letter to the editor - Stay out of Social Circle Dear Editor: I would like to comment on the letter sent by our County Commissioners to Social Circle opposing the proposed drag strip. Shame, shame, shame for our Newton County elected officials for getting involved in another county and government’s business. But to do it in a letter that they made public is even worse. This probably assures that ... |
