Eddie Phillips, age 68 of Covington, passed away on February 7, 2010, at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, after a 10-month battle to survive a heart attack.  He was born in DeKalb County, Georgia, on June 15, 1941, to the late Edward and Mary Phillips.  He was a 1959 graduate of Avondale High School.  After graduation he enlisted in the Air Force Reserves, being called to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  While serving several years in the Reserves, he worked for Liberty National Insurance Company in Atlanta.  Later he worked for Independent Life, which brought Eddie to Covington where he would eventually open up Key Realty Company after going to Real Estate School at night to eventually earn his Brokers License.  He then attended classes from the Lincoln Graduate Center and became a State of Georgia Certified General Real Estate Appraiser.  He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Covington and at one time taught Sunday School there.  He served on the Tax Assessors Board for Newton County, as well as the Tree Board and Parking Authority of the City of Covington.  Eddie was a past member of the Lions Club as well as Past Exhaulted Ruler of the Covington Elks Lodge #1806.  He was a member of the National Association of Master Appraisers, serving as Treasurer of the Georgia Chapter for many years.

 

 Eddie is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn.  Daughters and sons-in-law, Dana and Tommy Knight of Oxford, Sherie and Tim McCart of Covington and Paige and Jim Alexander of Covington.  Grandchildren Travis and Austin Knight, Zack and Alana Freeman and Laura McCart.  Sister Linda and Luther Roach of Covington, Brother Bobby Phillips, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 10th at 3:00pm at First United Methodist Church of Covington with the Reverned Doctor Douglas Gilreath, officiating.  Interment will be at Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Visitation will be from 1pm to 3pm and  5pm to 7pm on Tuesday, February 9th at Harwell-Wheeler Funeral Home in Covington, who are in charge of arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children at 6065 Roswell Road, Suite 505, Atlanta, GA 30328, or their website at www.braintumorkids.org.  Friends may sign the on-line register book at www.wheelerfuneralhome.com.
