Oak Hill earns tenth 4-H trophy

When 4-H leaders walk into a fifth grade classroom, the students smile and start sneaking notebooks back into their desks. They seem to think they get a break from learning for the next hour.

Dees: Feeling Strong

Have you ever felt strong? I mean truly strong, as in invincible?

About Faith: The strength to let go

As a child, I used to play a game of endurance with my friends. On the school playground, we would all hang from the bars of a "horizontal ladder" and see who could hang on the longest. Eventually, our hands would get tired, and one by one, we would drop to the ground. Last one hanging wins.

Grace Notes: This changes things! Part III

For the last two weeks now, we've been talking about the difference the Word of God makes in our hearts. It gives us the strength to face the storms of life, putting them all in the perspective of the eternity God has in store for us. Now, think about this. Those same promises are for everyone - and God wants to use you to share them.

About Faith: Liberal or Conservative?

In recent weeks, much space in the Religion section has been given to the subject of whether Jesus was a conservative or a liberal, and I feel compelled to add my two humble cents.

Yarbrough: Junior’s presidential pondering

I called Junior E. Lee, vice president and general manager of Round or Square Polls, Inc., a subsidiary of The Yarbrough Multinational Media and Pest Control Company, located over a pool hall in Greater Garfield, Georgia, to see who he thinks might be running for president in 2012.

Grace Notes: This changes things! Part II

No matter who you are, storms will come in your life. But as Jesus preaches in his Sermon on the Mount, he makes it clear that with his word, we handle those storms better. And the more we are in the word, the more firmly entrenched we become so we can hide from the storms in those offers and promises of God.

Dees: Was Jesus a Liberal?

One of the phrases that you will hear from time to time in the news media is, "Jesus was a liberal," meaning that Jesus was left winged in his political thought. Many political pundits will say that when one reads the New Testament, it is obvious that Jesus was socialistic in his thinking, and that if he walked the earth today, he would surely be among those on the political left.

Scharf: Do Not Worry!

"Is this stuff going on in Egypt a sign of the end of the world?" "If I lose my job, we'll never make it." "I'm worried that we'll lose our house." "What does all this mean for our kids?" "I can't take one more loss. I'll lose my mind!"

Dale: Judge Not

"Judge not, that you be not judged, for with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get back."

We love these words that Jesus spoke in his Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7:12). But as with many of his lessons, this one is prone to misapplication. Many trip over it and rise from the dust to follow a different path. Others pull this arrow out of their quiver to fire back at judgmental Christians.
