On Tuesday, history will be made. According to the 20th Amendment to the Constitution of these United States of America, at 12 noon on the 20th of January, President Elect Barack Obama will raise his right hand and speak the 36 word oath of office to become the 44th President of our proud country. It's a big day, costing tens of millions of dollars when it's all said and done. There's pomp, circumstance, and so ...
Did your parents ever ask you that question? Something happened; you got called into the room - and then the question: "What do you have to say for yourself?" In all my years as a child - I never quite figured out the right answer to that one. I wish I had studied this text more closely sooner.
Before we pack up our Christmas decorations and the story of Christmas along with it for another year, it would do us all well to visit again the story of the birth of Christ in Luke 2:8-14. Here we read about the angels announcing the birth of Christ to shepherds who were tending their flocks by night. They said: "glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men." (Luke 2:14)
Way back when, when I asked my wife to marry me, she didn't say "Yes." Well, eventually she did, but not right away. She said something much better. She grabbed my face in her hands and said, "You mean, I get you? You picked me?" as if I was some sort of prize. (You can see what they mean when they say love is blind).
Depending on when you read this, the countdown to Christmas is awfully close to single digits. Christmas is coming. Are you ready for it? There are probably still gifts to buy and parties to plan and people to call and events to schedule, and decorations to finish, and cookies to bake, and the list goes on. But those are all physical things. Even more, we need to prepare for Christmas spiritually. In the church year, ...
In the first part of Psalm 27, we talked about the one wish David had - to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life. Today, I want to look at what comes next. I want to look at the result of that time in God's house, that regular and cherished time with our God.  Right after David said ...
We live in a world of hurt, pain, chaos, disappointment, and injury. Life is tough. Sometimes it is discouraging and difficult to cope with all that we face. It is easy to allow these things to damage us physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Wake up. For some people I know, those are some of the harshest words in the English language. "Wake Up" is not always an easy thing to hear. But in our lesson for today, it's what Jesus is calling to us, his Church, specifically to each and every one of us. Wake Up.
Weddings are a big deal - ask any bride the week of her big day. Or, maybe you shouldn't. She probably has enough on her mind. I think that makes my point. Weddings are a big deal. So it makes sense that Jesus, in our sermon text, uses the picture of a wedding to show that what God has provided for us is a big deal.
As Christians, we have a great responsibility, especially at a time of elections. The greatest privilege in the world is to be a Christian American. As such, we should pray earnestly, live morally, and vote responsibly. Never before has more been at stake in an election.
In Ephesians 2:19, Paul tells us that we are members of God's household. That means we are the family of God. The church is composed of everyone, everywhere, who has turned away from their sins and trusted Jesus Christ as their personal savior, and are walking in a daily relationship of obedience to him and his word. Just as our individual family members are different from one another, so there is great diversity ...
How would you fill in the following sentence? "This past week I have been most concerned about _____________." Most of us have been wrapped up in our own worlds, worrying about food, clothes, cars, housing, or insurance. We have spent 40 or more hours paying for such things, ten or more hours commuting to and from our jobs. We have spent numerous hours cooking, cleaning, doing yard work and laundry. All important things ...
The ground is broken. The building process has officially begun its slow journey to completion. Abiding Grace is building a church just as soon as all the ground gets moved and the signatures are all in place, and all that other stuff. But, remember, this physical building we're constructing is nothing compared with the building God is doing in us.
Our heritage is very important in determining our future. Karl Marx once said that a people without a heritage is easily led. He certainly talked a lot of people out of their heritage.
The Church as the Bride of Christ Throughout Scripture, the people of God are referred to in many different ways. They are called the covenant community, the flock of God, the temple of God, a chosen people, a royal priesthood, the family of God, and the body of Christ. Biblical writers also used another metaphor to describe the spiritual relationship between God and Israel in the Old Testament and between Christ and the Church in ...
