A blessed sanctuary

Allen Memorial Methodist Church sits on the scenic campus of Oxford College. Founded in 1841 by renowned missionary John Allen, Allen Memorial's main sanctuary has been a part of the Oxford community for more than 100 years. Scharf: What good are words?

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me." You've heard that, right? How about, "The pen is mightier than the sword"? I'm sure you've heard both. But both can't be true. Which is it? Do words have no power or are they more powerful than armies and tanks?

He's got plans

"I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." God said that (Jeremiah 29:11). Have you ever felt like saying, "Yeah, right" when you hear it? Intellectually, we can say that we agree. We know God is in control and he knows what he's doing and he's working for our good. We can say that with our mouths….but do our hearts always buy it? Do we always live like it?

Just a thought: Get your hands dirty

Could a doctor treat a patient without ever examining them? Not very well. Could a hair dresser cut or style hair without touching the client's hair? No. In the same manner neither can Christians be of very much influence if we don't go to and touch sinners. I know many have come from places in their lives they don't ever want to go back to and this certainly takes some sensitivity and discernment. But neither can we isolate ourselves from all sinners once we become a Christian and still be an effective witness. Jesus' model of evangelism ...

Do not be afraid — you are valuable

Last week, we saw how intimidating it is to see what God expects of us as Christians. If you missed it, check out the 7/13/14 sermon at www.abidinggrace.com. For now, let's just say that Jesus made it pretty clear that we'd suffer for following him. Only once we realize what God expects of us and how far we fall short, and the punishment we should have for that, only then are we ready to read the rest of this section of Scripture where Jesus sends out his disciples as workers in his harvest field.

Just a thought: Open the box

Open the box. No, really, open the box. You're probably saying, "What box?" To which I would respond the box we all have. You know, the one we keep God in. Ah, now you get it, don't you? We all have a God box. The box is our image of God, His size and ability. Some people's box is bigger than others, but we all have one. Some are limited in size and we call them "the willing box" or "the God can't use me box," some have a "God can't do that" size box ...

Rasmussen: Do not be afraid — this is expected

Meriam Yahia Ibrahim. Have you heard that name? On May 11th of this year she was convicted of apostasy and adultery. What had she done? Well, she was a Christian, having been raised by her Christian mom. But since her dad was a Muslim, even though he had been absent, since he was a Muslim – her being a Christian was apostasy. And then, she married a Christian and got pregnant. And since she was supposed to be a Muslim, and he wasn't a Muslim man, that's adultery. The Sudanese government gave her three days to reject the Christian ...

Just a thought: Lord, you take over

Isn't it true that we spend most of our time operating in our own strength and power? When was the last time you said, "Lord, You take over…" and wasn't it after you had given it your best and your best wasn't good enough to get it done. We often fall into the trap of thinking "This is what I do, and I will do it…Spiritual and impossible things are what God does and when I need help with those things I'll turn to Him." But just as it was for Peter, it is for ...

Live Nativity at East Newton Baptist

When East Newton Baptist Church presents its production of "Bethlehem: A Live Nativity" Dec. 8, no one involved in the production, not the church's pastor, Tom Lee, nor the 25 cast members, nor the army of church volunteers who have worked to bring together the drama, will be the least bit surprised or upset if the youngest cast member goes a little "off script.''

Celebrating the Festival of Lights

The Jewish celebration of Chanukah is often associated with the Christian holiday of Christmas, but that association has little to do with the significance of each holiday and more to do with the timing. Each is celebrated at the end of the year when the holiday season has hit full swing. But much like the story of Christmas, the story of Chanukah is a rich one.
