Six years ago, over 500 volunteers came throughout the summer to build the Emmanuel Community Church. From a humble beginning with only 22 members that met at Lorraine Elementary School for weekly church services in 2005, Emmanuel Community Church has since grown and flourished and is in need of more space.
On Sunday, Covington First United Methodist Church will hold their annual Blessing of the Backpacks Service. Students of all ages, teachers, administrators and all school employees are invited to bring their Backpacks to worship on Sunday morning to a special service to pray for a great school year. Each person will receive a tag to attach to their backpack that says, "The church family of FUMC loves them and are praying for them."
Spring Ministries, Inc., a non-profit organization that helps single parents and their children, will hold a fundraiser dinner at 5 p.m. on July 30 at DeKalb Tech's Newton Center, 8100 Bob Williams Parkway, Covington.

Air National Guard Col. Max Wood, a former U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, will be the featured speaker for a casual worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Prospect United Methodist Church, 6752 Ga. Highway 212 in Covington.
Frank B. Turner will lead the adult Bible class at the upcoming Salem Campmeeting, which begins Friday, July 8, at the historic Salem campground.The adult class will be held 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 11, through Friday, July 15, at the Salem Hotel. The 183rd campmeeting runs July 8-15.
Summer fun: Students at vacation Bible school at Covington First Baptist Church prepare to learn about missions in Haiti and around the world in a session on Thursday. The children also enjoyed creating praise music and playing on giant inflatables, coloring, mining for rocks and learning about their Christian faith.
Let's get cooking: Covington First United Methodist Church Vacation Bible School will be held at the church from 9 a.m. to noon on June 27 through July 1. The theme is the Shake It Up Cafe - Where Kids Carry Out God's Recipe!
