In writing this new column, I thought long and hard about what the first topic should be on. What is important from the perspective of a youth pastor? What do we know that other people should know? Since it is February and Valentine's Day is right around the corner, I settled on love in the form of service.
The local pastors network, the Interdenominational Movement for Pastoral Accountability, Collaboration and Training (IMPACT), formerly PACT, is calling for a Unity Prayer Service for the City of Baltimore, its leadership and its churches during their state of emergency in the aftermath of the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody. The prayer service will be tonight, Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. at Springfield Baptist Church, 1877 Iris Drive.
A letter sent to pastors invited all to the prayer service and for those who could not attend to pray from their own churches.
When Glenn Yontz, Jr. and Kenny Murphy met through a mutual friend, both were men with a passion for showing God's love in the community. The two hit it off. And at the same time, Yontz was looking at what to do with his family's restaurant, Glenn's Bar-B-Que.
For many Christians in the western hemisphere, including Roman Catholics, the Sacrament of Confirmation is a celebration of their coming of age. In many Protestant churches, the rite of Confirmation is seen as a mature statement of a person's faith. Today, Good Hope Baptist Church is honoring Pastor E.J. Tomlinson and his dedication to the ministry for over 32 years. Coming into the ministry at the tender age of 25, Tomlinson says he was a young boy who has grown with this ministry. His long time wife of 28 years, Stephanie, and their dear son, Cornelius, have stood by Pastor Tomlinson as he has watched the face of his congregation transform over the years. Tomlinson has been noted as the 3rd longest person to pastor over a single congregation in Newton County.
