There are two actions, one taken and one on the table of the city council. The council has given themselves, including the mayor, a 50% pay raise. The proposal that is on the table would cut the property tax millage rate by half a mill.
With the proposed reservoir nearing the construction stage, there has been no protection for the citizens'/ratepayers' protection provided by the Newton County Board of Commissioners.
The past five years, I have watched the Alcovy Tiger band improve; that is thanks to one man who has come to work on his furlough days (that is days the BOE did not pay him and other teachers) with students to prepare them for the upcoming football season.

Dear Editor: Today I acquired a copy of the July 1 edition and perused its pages to discover any interesting tidbits waiting for one to espy. There were, of course, many interesting foci, from which must could be extracted. When I read the letters to the editor, I observed something I found most perplexing: a letter entitled "Election coverage," written by Mr. Heaton. The author of the letter does not understand the purpose of an ...
Dear Editor: In your paper dated Friday, June 29, 2012, you published your Election Season Policy, which stated you do not publish letters written specifically to promote the candidacy of individual candidates or to attack specific candidates on a personal level; this letter however raises some doubt as to what constitutes your conception of promoting or attacking individual candidates. In your opinion column, an article written by your columnist William Perugino cast some doubt on ...
Dear Editor: June 28, 2012 will go down as a fateful day. It is a sad day because we won't be paying for emergency room care for those bums who don't have health insurance. It means that a big hole in a hospital's budget won't be spread out across every other charge, like $20 band aids. It's all Obama's fault, forcing us to adopt Romney care that was dreamed up by the socialist Heritage Foundation. ...
Dear Editor: With the request for additional revenue for the GDOT from the upcoming election to add another penny to the state sales tax, many citizens throughout the State are realizing the GDOT is out of control.
Dear Editor: I have read that one out of three adults will suffer some form of serious vision loss in their life times. This is a staggering number of people who will need help in the form of technology for the visually impaired and/or counseling on how to cope with devastating loss. I, for one, have been dealing with significant vision loss since I was 30. I don't want to give away my age, but ...
Dear Editor: I cannot for the life of me understand why the taxpayers allow the city of Covington to selectively enforce the codes. On one occasion, I asked why a complete remodel of a structure two blocks from the code offices did not have a building permit. It was under construction for the better part of a year and every official who works for the city had to have passed it every day.
Dear Editor: I am troubled by the actions of the BOE regarding efforts for teaching Christian principles. Statements by the petitioners and some members of the board indicated that nothing would be required except permission. If there is no involvement of the education system then why appear before the board? By simply doing it after school hours and off campus, then all potential issues are avoided.
Dear Editor: The new website for the NCWSA billing section is being operated now by OFFICIAL PAYMENTS.com.
Dear Editor: I have seen multiple articles, letters to the editor and editorials in the past few months regarding the development of Newton County. Overlay plans, town centers, consultants - all the buzzwords with which I am familiar. You see, I moved to Covington from what it appears we are trying to become.
Dear Editor: On May 4, I learned of a meeting at Alcovy High school, that graduating students were informed by the staff that there would be a pat-down of each graduating senior prior to graduation to assure that no beach balls, cell phones or car keys were brought into the graduation area. I sent an email that night to all members of the Board of Education and to the superintendent asking if this was the policy of NCSS and who made the decisions to do pat-downs?
Dear Editor: FaithWorks has reached a milestone in its service to the community. As of the end of March, FaithWorks has served over 15,000 individuals in Newton County. We thank our sponsoring churches, area businesses, individuals and organizations for their support that has allowed us to provide mortgage/rental and utility assistance to our neighbors in need. We are especially grateful to our volunteers who give their time and talents to benefit others.
Dear Editor: This is a personal opinion, not one representing the Lions Club. The importance of 'quality of life' factors - such as our active local arts and cultural organizations - in attracting new employers is emphasized. Those who live in and around Newton County had two marvelous and free opportunities to experience a variety of music this past weekend. The 80-piece DeKalb Symphony Orchestra presented its annual Picnic Pops Concert on the lovely Newton ...
Dear Editor: The Society of SVDP would like to thank all who had a hand in making the Silent Auction and Wine Tasting on April 27, a success. We had a profound outpouring of generously donated items both local and beyond. All of the profit will go to the Society which is a nonprofit organization. Fox Vineyards (wine and Fox Vineyard glasses), Sherry Odum (catered the event), Michael Frederick (music), are so much appreciated. We ...
Dear Editor: I, Shannon Black, come forward to identify myself as "MsLoy" and "KBeet" named in a civil action on free speech web comments. I do not agree with the attack on free speech, but by coming out I share a voice for employees under attack who need their jobs. While I removed my child from NCSS last year, I maintain close internal contacts and will continue to share comments with the public through the ...
Dear Editor: What a shame! A small town paper advertising prostitution with a large, attention-getting provocative figure of a prostitute on the front page of your Sunday edition.
