Council actions troubling
There are two actions, one taken and one on the table of the city council. The council has given themselves, including the mayor, a 50% pay raise. The proposal that is on the table would cut the property tax millage rate by half a mill.
Proposed Bear Creek Reservoir scrutiny:
With the proposed reservoir nearing the construction stage, there has been no protection for the citizens'/ratepayers' protection provided by the Newton County Board of Commissioners.

The past five years, I have watched the Alcovy Tiger band improve; that is thanks to one man who has come to work on his furlough days (that is days the BOE did not pay him and other teachers) with students to prepare them for the upcoming football season.

Eyesores and code enforcement
Dear Editor: I cannot for the life of me understand why the taxpayers allow the city of Covington to selectively enforce the codes. On one occasion, I asked why a complete remodel of a structure two blocks from the code offices did not have a building permit. It was under construction for the better part of a year and every official who works for the city had to have passed it every day.
Board of Education
Dear Editor: I am troubled by the actions of the BOE regarding efforts for teaching Christian principles. Statements by the petitioners and some members of the board indicated that nothing would be required except permission. If there is no involvement of the education system then why appear before the board? By simply doing it after school hours and off campus, then all potential issues are avoided.

Bad side of growth
Dear Editor: I have seen multiple articles, letters to the editor and editorials in the past few months regarding the development of Newton County. Overlay plans, town centers, consultants - all the buzzwords with which I am familiar. You see, I moved to Covington from what it appears we are trying to become.
Alcovy graduation
Dear Editor: On May 4, I learned of a meeting at Alcovy High school, that graduating students were informed by the staff that there would be a pat-down of each graduating senior prior to graduation to assure that no beach balls, cell phones or car keys were brought into the graduation area. I sent an email that night to all members of the Board of Education and to the superintendent asking if this was the policy of NCSS and who made the decisions to do pat-downs?

Dear Editor: FaithWorks has reached a milestone in its service to the community. As of the end of March, FaithWorks has served over 15,000 individuals in Newton County. We thank our sponsoring churches, area businesses, individuals and organizations for their support that has allowed us to provide mortgage/rental and utility assistance to our neighbors in need. We are especially grateful to our volunteers who give their time and talents to benefit others.
