Letter from Harry L. Long

I have known Phil Johnson and Sam (Martin) Hay III for most of my life, and I totally agree with their opposition to the county's "so called" 2050 Plan. I view this plan as a direct attack on an individual's freedom and liberty. I have raised my right hand twice, and each time I took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. Immigrants started pouring into the U.S. (colonies) in the 1600s through today mainly for two purposes: I. To be free and II. To own property in "fee simple." In America ...

American made

Dear Editor: It amazes me that we can be sitting here having a discussion on whether or not to bail out the U.S. auto industry. There are actually people in this country who are prepared to see them fail, and some who say it may even be good for our country. Just where do these people come from?

How can we possibly be prepared to call ourselves the most powerful nation on earth, when we may soon not even be able to build the cars that we drive? Is there no pride left in "American Made?" Oh, forgive me.

Missing the moment

Dear Editor: I had not had an opportunity to see your paper on Friday before sending you [an] e-mail and I wish to ensure your awareness that it was a pleasure to see something worthy of the office in print about the President-elect. However, the historical nature of the election should not have had to wait from Wednesday until Friday to be noted.

Misreporting the news

Your article in Friday's edition ("GOP incumbent faces bus driver...") was most peculiar, from the headline to its lack of information on Mr. Eddie Johnson. I personally do not live in District 2, nor do I know Mr. Johnson, but I recognized a totally inept and biased article. You did publish a small "correction" on page 2 of the Sunday edition with no explanation of how your reporter left out all of Mr. Johnson's background.

Mockery of intellect

Dear Editor: Unbelievable is the best word I can conjure to describe a myriad of thoughts and emotions I experienced when I looked at the Wednesday, November 5, 2008 edition of The Covington News. A defining moment in history was totally downplayed as if it didn't matter. What a sad commentary for your newspaper and your reporting of national/world news.

What about the children?

My son is very sick - he has TBI, CP and SBS. He needs therapy badly and our government has denied him. They say as long as he is chronic, not acute, he does not qualify. If my son doesn't get the therapy he needs his muscles will become basically mush, he will never get better.

Profound gratitude

Dear Editor: On behalf of all the senior citizens of Newton County I would like to say thanks to the voters who made it possible for the $10,000 increase in seniors' homestead exemption which will take effect on Jan. 1, 2009. I would also like to thank our county commissioners for permitting this to come to a vote. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

A no-show for Georgia

I have tried every way possible short of stalking Toney Collins outside his home in order to get in touch with him. I had a project in one of my college courses that required me to make a profile for both candidates in the 95th district. I began trying to reach Collins in early August and have never heard back from him.

I don't claim to know a lot about politics in the 95th district, but what I can't help but wonder a thing or two about this man.

Learn from history

Dear Editor: I felt the need to respond to so many of the editorials I've seen lately espousing that we need higher taxes. In talking with many, I have found they fall in to two groups. Those that truly do not fully understand economics and those who understand very well the negative impact it will have but feel we should do it anyway because, "it's the right thing to do."

Uneven perspective

Dear Editor: In the "Our Thoughts" section of Sunday's paper it stated "the news media took great delight in showing the Palin effigy, but they did not demand this disgrace be taken down."

Letter to the editor... The Golden Calf

Dear Editor: I had lunch with a pastor friend of mine from Walton County whom I had not seen since we moved to Covington almost two-and-a-half years ago. He told me of a sermon he preached recently. The Bible story on which it was based is found in Exodus.

Letter to the editor... Respect my rights

Dear Editor: During this election year, I have often been overwhelmed with a sense of pride and gratitude at being an American. I was born here - I didn't have to make the difficult choice of leaving country and kin and have to resettle in a new place. I have even had the good fortune of living in the same area for over 30 years.

Reaffirming nod

Dear Editor: My husband and I recently and reluctantly started a new subscription to your newspaper. Our first paper was received on Sunday, Oct. 19. When I read your editorial "Our thoughts…Misplaced priorities" it was like a reaffirming nod that this subscription was a good thing.
