Dear Editor: This week in California they are in court over same-sex marriage. The people of California voted no in 2008 on same-sex marriage in California, but now same-sex marriage advocates are back in federal court today to try and say that it is unconstitutional. They may make it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and the court may over turn the vote of the people of that state.
If the U.S. Supreme Court can overturn the will of the people of a state then what will be next? I would think that overturning the will ...

Dear Editor: I would like to comment on a letter from Linda Cooper that was in the 1-13-2010 edition of The Covington News.
I do agree with her about people who would dump their animals like trash, not caring what happens to them. We have had more than our share dumped out here too. She is not alone in thinking that the Humane Society and Animal Control are one and the same. I am a member of the Humane Society and have heard people talking like that a lot. I do try to explain that we are not the same ...
Dear Editor: Gen. Ray Davis (MOH) Detachment 1188 of Covington, Georgia, will be videoing all (not just League members) Marines who wish to tell their stories of their time in the Corps. Too many Marines take their stories to the grave and that piece of history is lost forever. We think that is a shame.
The format will be a round-table discussion where one Marine's story may remind you of one from your past and then it will be your turn to tell your story. We have Marines coming who didn't see combat to Marines who landed on ...
Dear Editor: I live in Social Circle, and I have read the article produced by the CCoSC. These are long time residence who fear change but want everyone to change and be like them. I feel differently about the proposed plan, and think it's a wonderful opportunity for our businesses in Social Circle. We need revenue to fund our schools, roads, etc., that has to be paid for by our city. The people who would come in and eat, buy gas, and lodge would be of great benefit to us in my opinion. I think spending $5,000 a ...

Dear Editor: Hundreds of Newton County homeowners have Social Circle mailing addresses, but no Social Circle vote. We, like our friends within the city limits, would be harmed if the mayor and city council permit a drag strip to be built within the recently expanded city limits.

Dear Editor: I would like to comment on the letter sent by our County Commissioners to Social Circle opposing the proposed drag strip. Shame, shame, shame for our Newton County elected officials for getting involved in another county and government's business. But to do it in a letter that they made public is even worse. This probably assures that the drag strip will be built.
The Social Circle and Walton County government is no more going to appreciate the Newton government getting into their affairs than Newton would if it were reversed. What would have been wrong with our ...
Dear Editor: A week before Christmas, someone dumped seven Lab pups at the end of the dirt road on Robertson Road in Newborn. First of all, shame on the person who did this. If I had not came along, they would have died in the cold. They left them in an area that has no houses or shelter and has coyotes, wild animals, etc.
Dear Editor: There is a double standard in Washington D.C. The double standard is that Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said in a book that Obama is "light skinned" and "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." If that is not racist, I do not know what is, and Reid's not having to step down from being Senate Majority Leader is a double standard when Sen. Lott lost his leadership post.
Dear Editor: I emphatically agree with the previous opinions where disgust was shown for the manner in which our local elected officials are spending money. If our local Chamber of Commerce can't support itself, then why don't they just close their doors and go home like other businesses have to do? Why are they running to the city and county governments looking for a handout like a bunch of moochers? I also don't agree with money being spent on fancy houses for the Recreation Department, trails being paved and parks being built. A fraction of this money ...
Dear Editor: My sister had a minor traffic accident over the holidays and I happened to be in the area right when it happened and waited with her for a sheriff's car to arrive. When we called, we told the 911 operator that there were no injuries. A little while later two big Newton County Fire trucks arrived. Being a retired firefighter from another state, I struck up a conversation with one of the county guys. I was curious as to how the call was dispatched since we told 911 there were no injuries. The firefighter explained to me ...
Dear Editor: On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I wish to congratulate District Attorney W. Kendall Wynne Jr. on his appointment by Gov. Sonny Perdue as Superior Court Judge in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit, covering Newton and Walton counties.
