With the proposed reservoir nearing the construction stage, there has been no protection for the citizens'/ratepayers' protection provided by the Newton County Board of Commissioners.
The past five years, I have watched the Alcovy Tiger band improve; that is thanks to one man who has come to work on his furlough days (that is days the BOE did not pay him and other teachers) with students to prepare them for the upcoming football season.
More than 2,000 years ago, God's precious son Jesus Christ was sent to our world for the salvation of all races and nations. Our holy and heavenly God gave everyone the chance to make the ultimate decision: to select Jesus as the Lord and Savior of our souls. It is our decision to choose Jesus. His love is it.
To the editor: Our great nation has made many enemies over the past several years. Since the world's largest Army is comprised of U.S. citizens, who stand ready to fight and defend our homeland, there is no reasonable excuse for anyone to want to disarm our homegrown militia, except our enemies who wish to destroy our free nation. As far as Congress is concerned, as well as state and local governments, there are ...
To the editor: There are two parts of the marriage process - the civil license that you get from your local government and the religious ceremony. As far as the law and the economy are concerned, possessing a marriage license is the crucial part. It causes a couple to be treated as a joint partnership for legal purposes in terms of contracts and liabilities. The loan holder doesn't care if you were married ...

Dear Editor: There's a kind of stench hanging over our country. It is the stink of corruption on a grand scale with a large admixture of incompetence thrown in. It's not new; we've always had our Bernie Cornfields, the 'pump and dump' thugs of New York boiler room infamy, the Jack Abramoffs, Duke Cunninghams, Rod Blagojevichs, Bernie Madoffs, Hughey Longs, etc. These crumb bums now permeate American business and government at ...
Dear Editor: On Sunday, Jan. 25 The Covington News ran an editorial accompanied by an artist's rendering of the late trio, The Three Stooges. The editorial took issue with the way three commissioners cast their vote regarding a hiring and spending freeze. I would like to take this opportunity to remind the newspaper staff of a few points.
Dear Editor: I'm beginning to believe that education, like religion and politics, should not be discussed between seemingly like-minded individuals. One soon discovers that each views the other as having too little mind to share, or perhaps too much. The news report about the merger of the technical college system with two-year colleges has already begun a schism in the community, many of whom see the band beginning to rearrange the ...
Dear Editor: Once a man or woman leaves the military, they are entitled to earned benefits, but each must be applied for in writing. Within the state of Georgia, the Georgia Department of Veterans Service provides their expertise, at no charge, to maximize each and every benefit applied for. Additionally, the veteran's spouse and children may be entitled at earned benefits. Each office is called a VSO - Veterans Service Office. The VSO in Conyers ...
Dear Editor: As mayor of Covington, I had the pleasure of working with John Grotheer, city of Covington finance director and city clerk, for over 10 years. We worked together to create over ten budgets for the City of Covington. This process is never an easy one, because it is hard to estimate the income and outgo in a $122 million budget, with its many variables. However, during the 10 years that John served the ...
Dear Editor: Seniors over age of 65 should not be paying county school taxes. We have already satisfied our duties and obligations to schools during the years of raising our own children. Most counties around Newton have already paid respect to their senior citizens, for I know Walton County has eliminated school taxes for all seniors over 65. Most of us live on a very small fixed income, and by eliminating this school tax, we ...
Dear Editor: This week I read in your newspaper, wherby Senator John Douglas, from District 17, was going to try and get a law passed, whereby, anyone that had any kind of a sex conviction, could not never be on any school board in The State Of Georgia, even after the person had served all of their court ordered time as well has having to wait 10 year's, to show the state that they have ...
Dear Editor: Containing my anger as I write this is not easy. Eight years ago my country was prosperous, optimistic and moving forward. We were at peace, enjoyed a budget surplus and a good name throughout most of the world. Not today. Today, we stand amid the rubble of eight disastrous years. We have the greatest budget deficit in history; we are at war on two fronts; our borders are out of control; our justice ...
Dear Editor: The three district commissioners who voted to retain Tommy Craig as county attorney seriously abrogated their fiscal responsibility not only to their constituents but to the county as a whole. This is not a broadside against Tommy Craig, but rather a commentary on elected officials who decided to vote for something without having all available information at their fingertips.
On Jan. 17 we buried our father. The funeral procession started at Harwell-Wheeler Funeral Home in Covington and ended at Stewart Baptist Church cemetery - 25 plus miles away. On the way, I witnessed a truly awesome sight. Everyone driving in the opposite direction pulled to the side of the road as a sign of respect and sympathy.
Dear Editor: Your paper printed an article on the Jan. 2 front page about what Sen. Douglas was going to do concerning sex offenders running for school board seats in Newton County. My first question is has John Douglas ever done anything in office except talk about sex? Here are some cold hard facts. One year ago John Douglas and the school board member for District Two of Newton County talked about my running for ...
Dear Editor: The Covington Lions Club and Main Street Covington would like to say thanks to all of the people who took part in the 2008 Christmas Parade held on Dec. 6. This year's parade was a success because of the efforts of many folks like you. As the Lions and you have found, it takes time to plan and prepare entries in the parade. Whether it be a walking group, ...
Dear Editor: 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the Covington Housing Authority Complex, all of the staff, volunteers and residents gathered around just to say thanks to the multitude of sponsors, funders, collaborative partners, donors and supporters of this year's 2008 Christmas On Alcovy and the many programs, community events and day-to-day operations that have made it possible for the Sojourner Truth Observational Study Hometel Inc. to declare an ...
Dear Editor: Recently I was involved in a court trial because my car was stolen. My experience with the court system on this case was extremely unpleasant. The verdict I assume you can already figure out, but it's what happened in this case to cause this verdict that is so overwhelming. A key witness testified to one thing under oath a month earlier. After that, he was ...
Dear Editor: In the last five years my family has burned up three washing machines, two dishwashers and two hot water heaters. Why? We live in what we call the "no water zone." Our neighbor has burned up two hot water heaters in less than a year. Our water provider continues to raise our monthly water bills but does nothing ...
