To the editor: There are two parts of the marriage process - the civil license that you get from your local government and the religious ceremony. As far as the law and the economy are concerned, possessing a marriage license is the crucial part. It causes a couple to be treated as a joint partnership for legal purposes in terms of contracts and liabilities. The loan holder doesn't care if you were married in a church or in the backyard. Good medical care not cheap

Dear Editor: I read in The Covington News that the Newton County Medical facility is in the black, making a profit and that's good news. Doesn't surprise me though. I walked in the Patient Emergency area the other day, after a home accident and walked out about three hours later after receiving excellent treatment and care. A few days later, I received a statement for $3,579.21. Just like freedom is not free, neither is good medical care.

Every school needs an officer

Dear Editor: I am urging the Newton County School Board to place a law enforcement officer in every elementary school. The law enforcement officer needs to be at the front door of each elementary school to ward off maniacs and any other gun-carrying individual.

Response to Conn. shootings

Dear Parents: By now, you are well aware of the tragic school shooting that occurred Friday morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. As a parent, I am heavy-hearted and know that you, like me, are hurting. There will be extensive media coverage of this terrible tragedy on the news and much discussion about it in our communities in the days and weeks ahead.

Emergency Action Plan

Once again, we see the necessity of school systems in even the quietest locations having a plan in place to deal with what happened in Newtown, Conn. These tragedies are happening more and more and both school systems and businesses must have an Emergency Action Plan in place, practiced and ready in case the unthinkable happens.
