Newton BOC Methods Disappointing

The structure of county government was on the Newton County Board of Commissioner's (BOC) agenda again at its Sept. 2, 2014 meeting. It was on the secret agenda of District Commissioner Levie Maddox, that is. As readers may recall, this has been a topic of discussion since February and the BOC has met with experts from both the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) and the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission several times. Representatives of both clearly have indicated that having both a full time commission chairman and a county manager should be changed to improve the efficiency and ...

Letter to Editor

There is an old adage that legislating in a nasty business, kind of like making sausage. Well I have made sausage before, and it was not nearly as nasty as the legislating I saw last night at the Newton County Board of Commissioners meeting.

Letter to Editor

The Center for Community Preservation and Planning, commonly referred to as the Center, is a non-governmental organization which came into being shortly after the turn of the century. Immigrants started pouring into the U.S. (colonies) in the 1600s through today mainly for two purposes: I. To be free and II. To own property in "fee simple." In America ...

Hay: Land use plan from hell

What is on my mind and the minds of many other Newton County citizens is the plot by a small group of people to pull off a new zoning plan to severely restrict what you can and can't do with your own property.

Text amendment

The Covington City Council is considering a text amendment to the city parking ordinance which would significantly weaken the ordinance and undermine its purpose of permitting and encouraging walkability and pleasing aesthetics in future commercial development. This ordinance has been in effect since 2008; McDonald's, IHOP, Kaufman Tire, Covington Ford, Waffle House have willingly complied with it.
