More than 2,000 years ago, God's precious son Jesus Christ was sent to our world for the salvation of all races and nations. Our holy and heavenly God gave everyone the chance to make the ultimate decision: to select Jesus as the Lord and Savior of our souls. It is our decision to choose Jesus. His love is it.
To the editor: Our great nation has made many enemies over the past several years. Since the world's largest Army is comprised of U.S. citizens, who stand ready to fight and defend our homeland, there is no reasonable excuse for anyone to want to disarm our homegrown militia, except our enemies who wish to destroy our free nation. As far as Congress is concerned, as well as state and local governments, there are ...
To the editor: There are two parts of the marriage process - the civil license that you get from your local government and the religious ceremony. As far as the law and the economy are concerned, possessing a marriage license is the crucial part. It causes a couple to be treated as a joint partnership for legal purposes in terms of contracts and liabilities. The loan holder doesn't care if you were married ...

Dear Editor: Unbelievable is the best word I can conjure to describe a myriad of thoughts and emotions I experienced when I looked at the Wednesday, November 5, 2008 edition of The Covington News. A defining moment in history was totally downplayed as if it didn't matter. What a sad commentary for your newspaper and your reporting of national/world news.
My son is very sick - he has TBI, CP and SBS. He needs therapy badly and our government has denied him. They say as long as he is chronic, not acute, he does not qualify. If my son doesn't get the therapy he needs his muscles will become basically mush, he will never get better.
Dear Editor: On behalf of all the senior citizens of Newton County I would like to say thanks to the voters who made it possible for the $10,000 increase in seniors' homestead exemption which will take effect on Jan. 1, 2009. I would also like to thank our county commissioners for permitting this to come to a vote. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I have tried every way possible short of stalking Toney Collins outside his home in order to get in touch with him. I had a project in one of my college courses that required me to make a profile for both candidates in the 95th district. I began trying to reach Collins in early August and have never heard back from him. I don't claim to know a ...
Dear Editor: I felt the need to respond to so many of the editorials I've seen lately espousing that we need higher taxes. In talking with many, I have found they fall in to two groups. Those that truly do not fully understand economics and those who understand very well the negative impact it will have but feel we should do it anyway because, "it's ...
Dear Editor: In the "Our Thoughts" section of Sunday's paper it stated "the news media took great delight in showing the Palin effigy, but they did not demand this disgrace be taken down."
Dear Editor: I had lunch with a pastor friend of mine from Walton County whom I had not seen since we moved to Covington almost two-and-a-half years ago. He told me of a sermon he preached recently. The Bible story on which it was based is found in Exodus.
Dear Editor: During this election year, I have often been overwhelmed with a sense of pride and gratitude at being an American. I was born here - I didn't have to make the difficult choice of leaving country and kin and have to resettle in a new place. I have even had the good fortune of living in the same area for over 30 years.
Greed is not good  Dear Editor: This is in response to the letter to the editor titled "Greed is Good?" The author of this letter would have us believe that greed and ambition are virtually the same thing, and that people are not clever enough to judge between the two. Here are the dictionary's definitions of greed and ambition.  Ambition: an earnest desire for some type of achievement or distinction, as power, honor, fame, or ...
Dear Editor: My husband and I recently and reluctantly started a new subscription to your newspaper. Our first paper was received on Sunday, Oct. 19. When I read your editorial "Our thoughts…Misplaced priorities" it was like a reaffirming nod that this subscription was a good thing.
Dear Editor: As a relatively new resident of Newton County (2 years) I would like to share my view on the new hotel and convention center project.
Grass greener at YMCA  Dear Editor: I recently visited the Covington Family YMCA's new Outdoor Center to coach my 4-year old son, Mac, in soccer. While the new fields did not help break Mac's scoring slump, I came away very impressed with the beginnings of the Y's ambitious facility.  They have the sort of field that is so green, you wish you had a picnic. Grass so soft, older men like me get the (misguided) ...
Dear Editor: I formed a group named Newton Citizens for Tax Relief some two years ago. Since then we have worked with the School Board and the Board of County Commissioners to increase the homestead exemption for seniors. The School Board saw fit to let the voters of Newton County vote on a $10,000 increase in the senior exemption, and it passed by 78 percent in February.  The ...
Dear Editor: This week, there is in a local newspaper a real good article, about an additional increase in the homestead exemption for the property owner's of Newton County, that is over 65 year's old and has income of $25,000 or less per year, that will be on our Nov. 4 ballot for the senior's of Newton County. The article went on in detail, of how much ...
Dear Editor: After spending a considerable amount of time in an interview with Rachel Oswald expressing my position, I regret having to write this letter to set the record straight.
