Examples of civility

Dear Editor: I have grown weary of the tenor of political debate on the airways, the internet, and in print. The "silent majority" remains silent because they don't want to be drawn into the ugliness of the current climate of "conversation." As the saying goes, "don't wrestle with a pig, because you both get dirty and the pig likes it."

Can someone explain?

Dear Editor: I have not lived in Newton County very long. I moved here last year to be closer to my daughter and grandchildren. I do not understand the manner in which the city of Covington and Newton County decides how tax money is to be spent.

Not a podunk area

Dear Editor: I am writing concerning the proposed drag strip which if built at the juncture of I-20 and Highway 278 would be less than three miles from my home on Cannon Drive in Social Circle.

Letter to the editor - Point of no return

Dear Editor: Make no mistake about it, in my opinion, vehicles that race on drag strips are designed and built to do two things: they make an incredible amount of noise and they go extraordinarily fast. Pertaining to drag racing, speed and noise go hand in hand. You do not have one without the other. Regardless of how many noise engineers are consulted and no matter how you spin it, drag strips are built in wide-open spaces and the noise from the vehicles adversely affects the quality of life for people for miles around. The noise level from these drag ...

Letter to the editor - Senseless coverage

Dear Editor: The article you printed Friday, Jan. 14 on the front page, "Members of Judges's Family Sentenced in 2008 Fight," was totally unnecessary. Why humiliate individuals again, more than a year later? Yes, what happened last December was not appropriate behavior, but that was last year. Why reprint a detailed summary on the front page with pictures. This is old news. What purpose did it serve? If you thought it was necessary to report the results of the court hearings, you could have written a short article on an inside page without pictures. Do you print the results ...

Letter to the editor... Congrats KCNB

Dear Editor: I just finished reading the KCNB supplement in Sunday's Covington News. Wow, what an outstanding organization. I particularly enjoyed the older photographs. Clearly, KCNB has been ahead of its time for many years.

Letter to the editor... Genuine motives

Dear Editor: In this era we live in, almost everything is built on the foundation and the focus of commerce or monetary gain. Unfortunately, our churches are not exonerated from this. It has been my observation that many of the churches that exist in today's society are more concerned with an increase in numbers or members and prosperity. The aspiration to become mega-churches has led many of our religious associations to erroneously revamp their missions and lose track of what should be their focal point: serving the people.

Same Sex Marriage

Dear Editor: This week in California they are in court over same-sex marriage. The people of California voted no in 2008 on same-sex marriage in California, but now same-sex marriage advocates are back in federal court today to try and say that it is unconstitutional. They may make it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and the court may over turn the vote of the people of that state.

If the U.S. Supreme Court can overturn the will of the people of a state then what will be next? I would think that overturning the will ...

There's a difference

Dear Editor: I would like to comment on a letter from Linda Cooper that was in the 1-13-2010 edition of The Covington News.

I do agree with her about people who would dump their animals like trash, not caring what happens to them. We have had more than our share dumped out here too. She is not alone in thinking that the Humane Society and Animal Control are one and the same. I am a member of the Humane Society and have heard people talking like that a lot. I do try to explain that we are not the same ...

Spend-happy

Recording the past

Dear Editor: Gen. Ray Davis (MOH) Detachment 1188 of Covington, Georgia, will be videoing all (not just League members) Marines who wish to tell their stories of their time in the Corps. Too many Marines take their stories to the grave and that piece of history is lost forever. We think that is a shame.

The format will be a round-table discussion where one Marine's story may remind you of one from your past and then it will be your turn to tell your story. We have Marines coming who didn't see combat to Marines who landed on ...

New Dragstrip

Dear Editor: I live in Social Circle, and I have read the article produced by the CCoSC. These are long time residence who fear change but want everyone to change and be like them. I feel differently about the proposed plan, and think it's a wonderful opportunity for our businesses in Social Circle. We need revenue to fund our schools, roads, etc., that has to be paid for by our city. The people who would come in and eat, buy gas, and lodge would be of great benefit to us in my opinion. I think spending $5,000 a ...

What a drag

Dear Editor: Hundreds of Newton County homeowners have Social Circle mailing addresses, but no Social Circle vote. We, like our friends within the city limits, would be harmed if the mayor and city council permit a drag strip to be built within the recently expanded city limits.
