Council actions troubling
There are two actions, one taken and one on the table of the city council. The council has given themselves, including the mayor, a 50% pay raise. The proposal that is on the table would cut the property tax millage rate by half a mill.
Proposed Bear Creek Reservoir scrutiny:
With the proposed reservoir nearing the construction stage, there has been no protection for the citizens'/ratepayers' protection provided by the Newton County Board of Commissioners.
Letter: Band director will be missed
The past five years, I have watched the Alcovy Tiger band improve; that is thanks to one man who has come to work on his furlough days (that is days the BOE did not pay him and other teachers) with students to prepare them for the upcoming football season.

Dear Editor: I am a parent of a child at Alcovy High School. I read the article where Amber Pittman crime/education Reporter made the statement, "Newton County school system officials deny the school was ever in lockdown and that a Coke bottle that contained a liquid was thrown in the commons area of the school and the bottle cap did blow off."

We need everyone's help to make sure our Newton County Board of Commissioners knows we have many citizens in Newton County who support the development of a county-wide trail and greenway system. And, that we believe the County should investigate the potential purchase of the Norfolk Southern Railroad right-of-way from Porterdale to Mansfield and the possible development of a multi-use trail along that corridor.

Dear Editor: Unfortunately more and more smaller cities such as Porterdale will not be able to afford to be a functioning city. Dear editor: For the love of journalistic integrity, please pull Mr. Patrick Durusau's column entitled, "Irrelevant Rand," so that Mr. Durusau can actually read the book "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. Mr. Durusau's interpretation of this novel is so egregiously wrong that there is no possible way that he has read it.
Typical baseless criticism
Dear Editor: Mr. Durusau correctly identifies that sales of "Atlas Shrugged" have skyrocketed recently but quickly loses touch with the facts after that ("Irrelevant Rand" 4-3-09).
