Leadership in education

Nov. 19 was my second class day in Leadership Newton. Since it was education day we toured various schools and colleges and learned as much as the students we met.

Wonderful couple

Congratulations to T.K. and Louise Adams for being honored to light the holiday decorations on the Newton County Historic Courthouse.

If there ever was a couple who deserved this honor it is T.K and Louise for their tireless dedication to the Newton County Community Band, the Newton County School System and the Washington Street Community Center.

Good work CPD, NCSO

The Covington Police Department, under the direction of Chief Stacey Cotton, and the Newton County Sheriff's Department, under the direction of Sheriff Ezell Brown, deserve a great big pat on the back this holiday season.

Their joint effort in the quick capture of the Wal-Mart/United Bank Bandit continues a tradition of arrests of people who think Covington is just a sleepy, little place where they can stop and rob businesses of their money.

A century of service

In today's paper there is a special commemorative edition devoted to the 100 years of service by the men and woman who serve and have served our city in the Covington Fire Department. This section alone is testimony to the love and pride that local merchants and civic groups have for our fire department.

We are particularly proud of Chief Don Floyd and his father, R.T., who for 60 plus years of the 100 years of the CFD, have served as the leaders of that force.

Flying high

The never-say-die Eastside Eagles, who were for all practical purposes discounted after the first couple of games of this season, have soared back into the limelight to be in strong contention to play for the state Championship in division AAA.

The Eagles, led by coach Rick Hurst, are flying high late in the season for the second consecutive year.

Help Santa visit the troops

We hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving feast as well as spending quality time with loved ones.

A great deal of you also have this day off as part of the Thanksgiving holiday. If you are going to brave Black Friday, then we urge you to look at the ads in Wednesday and today's papers to find some great bargains, which are especially necessary in these tough economic times.

Hangin’ in there

"So why did he REALLY do it?" I've been asked that question many times since the news broke that House Speaker Glenn Richardson had tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills.

A new Thanksgiving tradition

This is going to be a special Thanksgiving. My great-grandson Cameron Yarbrough and I are going to begin a new family tradition this week by sharing a birthday celebration. He will hit the ripe old age of 1 tomorrow and two days later I will become slightly older than Kennesaw Mountain.

Why dolphins are smarter than deer

I must warn you about the crazy animals living and dying around here. This fine Sunday morning, as I was driving to church, I hit a deer. Miraculously, there was no damage to life, limb, or car. The doe lived too, but she'll be nursing a sore rump for a few weeks. Now, when I get hit on the backside, I learn my lesson on the first whack, but the deer around here aren't that bright. They keep jumping in front of my car, again and again. You'd think one of them would wise up and educate ...
