Our thoughts: Newton can be a model

There is no question that we are suffering from a general lack of quality leadership in Newton County at this time. Can that be turned around? We think so, but it is going to take our current leadership to be willing to communicate and cooperate with other community officials to start the process.

Our thoughts: Celebrating Easter

Easter is early this year and that is appropriate because the renewal of the earth's splendor has also arrived early.

Out Thoughts

Last week we ran on these pages an editorial that encouraged voters not to just vote for a candidate because they had a "D" or a "R" behind their name or to vote for a candidate because of the color of their skin.

Pitch in

If in your travels around the Newton Community and the Social Circle community and you have been ashamed to see the trash that litters our highways and byways, next Saturday is your chance to not only get involved but in the process do something positive for our communities.

Our Thoughts: Where's the transparency?

The Association County Commissioners of Georgia is once again trying to get the state's General Assembly to make it harder for Georgia's residents to keep up with what is going on in the governments they support.

Our thoughts: Proud of our Rams

Courage is inner power to make you fight for your very existence and trying, when you know you may lose. Courage and determination makes a fighter.

Don't give up for Lent, just give

The official start of the Lenten season began this past week and we have heard many of our friends and colleagues talking about what they were going to give up for the 40 days leading up to the celebration of Christ's resurrection.

Fall festivals

The last few days after a miserable past week have been pretty near perfect as far as weather goes. We know a lot of folks are anxious to get out this weekend to enjoy our grand fall weather in Georgia.

Speak now or forever hold your peace

We are for taxpayers having their opinions heard at public meetings, in particular, meetings held to conduct city and county business.

If people would keep their comments concise and on-point, then we would shout from the rooftops that this should be done.

Our Thoughts... Vital organizations

We are fortunate to have civic groups like our local Kiwanis and Rotary in these times of major economic distress.

Government is bad — unless you need it

One of the themes underlying this year's waves of political protests - whether anti-tax, anti-Obama, anti-healthcare reform, whatever - is that government in all its forms should be abolished.

Our Thoughts... Disgraceful post

Someone or some group put a poll on Facebook Saturday, which has since been taken down because of its offensive nature, asking if the president of the United States should be assassinated.

A time for healing

"You keep carrying that anger, it'll eat you up inside…" Those lyrics from Don Henley (who I happen to think is the greatest singer/songwriter of all time as well as a modern day sage), are true to the very core. During a concert with The Eagles he said (referring to the song from which the lyrics are quoted), "This song took me 42 years to write and about four minutes to sing." I can totally relate.

A sign of waste

If you are driving down a Georgia highway and you see a big green sign touting the fact that work being done in that area is being provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a federal stimulus program being paid for by your federal taxes, note that each one of those signs cost about $1,200. At least 250 plus projects are planned in the state according to a report in the AJC recently.

A community asset

In these tough economic times the nonprofits in our area are taking a real hit, which is putting some of their good works in jeopardy.

We are glad to say that the Newton Fund, a local fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, is still viable and willing to help our local charitable agencies in any way they can.

Here comes the sun

Here in Georgia, we have desperately needed rain. For the last seven months, we have had fair to moderate precipitation - enough to take us off the drought list.

This past week we have received more rain than we ever could have imagined. It has rained so hard and so much that the soil could not absorb any more. As a result there has been major flooding across north Georgia as well as the property damage and, unfortunately, loss of life that accompanies such natural disasters.

Not again

The Vietnam era in this country was one of highs and lows. At first, it was patriotic to be in Southeast Asia to protect the world against the spread of communism. Then through the blunders of the both the Johnson and Nixon administration, who both handcuffed their military commanders and refused to have a policy that assured winning, this country was almost torn asunder.

We are heading down that path again; President Obama made the winning of the war in Afghanistan a cornerstone of his campaign policy. Since he has taken office, the death rate of our troops, which is ...

Welcome Rep. Marshall

We are pleased that Congressman Jim Marshall has listened to the requests of his local constituents and will hold a town hall meeting here in Newton County this Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at Alcovy High School.

Marshall, who is considered a Blue Dog Democrat by some, has given his time to be with us, and we appreciate that. We think he should be even more visible, so this is a good start.

A good suggestion

There has been much debate and concern about what entity should be placed in charge of the new Nelson Heights Community Center. We think that the suggestion that the Newton County Recreation Commission be in charge of running the center is a good one and a sound one.
