This week the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce hosted a pre-legislative meeting so their members could gain insight on the upcoming legislative year in Georgia. Sen. John Douglas and Rep. Doug Holt attended and gave the business community an update of what to expect.
The bottom line is - it doesn't look good as the state's revenue continues to decline.
A few months ago the parents of Deputy Wesley Atha started a community campaign to raise funds to purchase vests for the deputies employed by the Newton County Sheriff's Department. The goal of this campaign is $113,000. So far, the good folks of Newton County have raised $62,434 to that end.

One of the joys of living in Newton County at Christmas time is the annual presentation of the Arts Association in Newton County's presentation of "The Nutcracker" as performed by the Covington Regional Ballet.
A round of applause is due to the General Mills Corporation for donating 4.4 million boxes of cereal across the nation. Last week employees of our local plant loaded 10,000 boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios for Atlanta area food banks.
The Covington Food Pantry will, of course, have first dibs on the great Christmas gift.
