Our thoughts: Congratulations Rams

We are taking the advice of Newton football announcer Bill Dolan when he says "Ram fans get on your feet," and we urge the rest of Newton County to do the same.

Our thoughts: Bear Creek

Some good decisions by Newton County in the past have led to a current situation where we have a reliable water supply. The supply is such that if the theoretical doors of the county were to be shut right now, we probably would have plenty of water for the use of our children and grandchildren.

Some Sunday thoughts

"Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual - or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country."

Our thoughts: Motion denied

At Tuesday's Board of Commissioners public meeting, Commissioner John Douglas made a motion to defund The Center for Community Preservation and Planning. Thank goodness there was no second, and this ill-conceived motion died.

Our Thoughts: Political correctness

It seems that over the last six years, we as a country have had to endure one scandal after another; distrust in any government entity is at the highest it has been in most of our lifetimes.

Our Thoughts: Honor

Dr. William Dobbs was not only a good man and a great, caring doctor, but he was also an honorable politician. It was the right thing for the City of Covington to honor the memory of this respected man, just four months after his death.

Our Thoughts: Manners

It's become common for Newton County residents to see roads blocked off with filming equipment and tents set up hosting production company personnel, or to turn on their televisions and see the Covington Historic Courthouse or other familiar homegrown sights.

Our Thoughts: Curfew

Because we have no place for teens to hang out with their friends, such as a movie theater or a bowling alley, many of our Newton County teenagers visit local cities like Conyers to spend time with friends.

Fighting socialism in the depths of winter

It's freezing cold down here in Dixie! Listen, I fully expect the South to be humid and hot, balmy and breezy, and stifling and sticky, but nowhere did I sign up for frigid and frozen. We southerners will tolerate an occasional ice storm or that rare centimeter or two of snow, but weather like we've had for the past few months is nuts. The only solution to this craziness is to learn to control the weather ourselves. We try to control the economy, our destiny, and our kids, why can't we take on the weather? Would it ...

Our thoughts... Tax games

In an apparent error of equipment classification, local employer Bridgestone Golf overpaid their 2006 and 2007 taxes to the city of Covington and Newton County by a combined $108,000.

Setting a precedent

Members of the Covington City Council had to make a very hard decision Monday night.

The 4-2 vote allowed the folks who run the nonprofit Garden of Gethsemane Homeless Shelter to have a pass on their $5,000 utility deposit and to pay a little each month on their past due bills.

Many tasks at hand

After a week of appropriations hearings, we were back in session last week. The facts from the hearings were pretty sobering. Georgia, while not being in the kind of fiscal dire straights that other states are in, has more tough budget decisions ahead. Our initial challenge is to make corrections to the present, fiscal 2010, budget. The first half of the fiscal year (July through December of 2009) saw substantial declines in revenues. While it appears that we may be near the bottom of the downturn, with hopes that revenues will soon flatten rather than fall, the state will still ...

Our thoughts... NCSO honors heroes

Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown should be applauded for beginning a new law enforcement tradition. Brown has instituted a Purple Heart honor for deputies injured in the line of duty and a Lifesaving Award for those who go above and beyond the call of duty during life-threatening situations.

The least we can do

Over the past few weeks we have noticed a decrease in donations coming in the Newton County Sheriff's Office for the inVEST fund. The fund for the highest quality bullet-proof vests for our county's heroes has only grown a bit over $5,500 since Christmas.

The Covington News has pledged to run the names of the week's donors, as well as total funds raised that week, every Friday for a year. We would hate to print the total every Friday and not have reached the goal of $113,000 by September, especially since almost 65 percent of ...

A balance of power

We have run numerous letters to the editor lately regarding the money that is given to the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce by both the city council and board of commissioners.

We understand that in this economic climate, many feel this is a waste of tax dollars, especially with the basic needs of thousands of residents going unfulfilled.
