Our thoughts: Pension plan

The Covington City Council made a smart move last week when it voted to back off a hastily conceived plan to change city policy on pensions as they relate to retirees who come back to work for the Covington government.

Our Thoughts: Lead, follow, or get out of the way

As the Board of Commissioners prepares to convene Tuesday night, our elected representatives face a stark choice between raising the millage rate or making even more cuts to the budget, which will inevitably affect the hard working employees of Newton County.

Our Thoughts: Hometown Heroes

Life is very fleeting. None of us knows when our existence will end on this earth. Last week, 44-year-old Mun Hyuk Cha, a kind, hard-working businessman and owner of Magnet Package Store, and 39-year-old Otonicar Jimquez Aikens, a father who had just stopped by to pick up some things, were probably discussing the weather or exchanging pleasantries when Jeffery Pitts, a disgruntled customer, stormed in with a gun and ended their lives.

A very special Mother's Day

There is one thing that is as certain as anything can be - that our mothers, whether we are close to them or not, will always have a special place in our hearts.

Health scare: WWJD?

Are we a nation that measures the human worth of individuals based on their ability to pay? It's time for those who are religious and oppose single-payer national health care to tell the rest of us how, literally in God's name, they can do so. Have they traded their Biblical beliefs for political philosophies? Are they now serving two masters, and is Mammon winning out over the other? What would Jesus do? Would he care who paid for a child's expensive operation, would he say, "I'm sorry but if the government pays, it's a sin ...

Our Thoughts... InVEST in the NCSO

Our Thoughts... An American spirit

The American spirit has carried us through revolution, civil war, world wars, depressions and national tragedies. Each and every time the grit of the American spirit comes through and says enough is enough.

Judge Ozburn

We were disappointed - as we are sure his many friends were - that our own Judge Ozburn did not get the nod for the open spot on the Supreme Court. We greatly appreciate Senator John Douglas for nominating him.

Good for positive growth

We are anxious to see what good work the newly established Covington Redevelopment Authority will accomplish in its formative years.

The goals of the CRA are lofty, but we think if even one of them can be accomplished within the next few years, it will be a great success and make the city even more enjoyable and accommodating. We're not quite sure where to locate a downtown farmer's market or grocery, but we wouldn't mind being pleasantly surprised.

A blessing in Bolton

Communities like ours are blessed to have residents who chose this community to live in out of all the beautiful cities in Georgia.

Some of these people move here because of the ambiance, the traditions, the general peacefulness. When some of these newcomers decide to involve themselves in various groups of their adopted community, they bring with them a sense of pride and excitement.

Sis boom ba

It's been a long, hot summer. For some it has not been the best of summers, but the night air is starting to cool, the humidity is dropping and the start of the football season begins this week.

There is nothing like a battle on the gridiron to lift the spirits melted by scorching summer heat.

The good war

Afghanistan was supposed to be the good war - the one Democrats said we should be fighting instead of Iraq. We heard it over and over again during the presidential campaign, as if to exorcise the image that a Democrat wasn't tough enough to assume the role of commander in chief. Candidate Obama repeatedly called the war in Iraq "a dangerous distraction" from the fight we should be waging and promised to "tak(e) the fight to al-Qaida in Afghanistan and Pakistan." But with a new poll out showing that a majority of Americans now think the war in Afghanistan ...

Our Thoughts... Parental involvement?
