Our Thoughts: Where's the transparency?

The Association County Commissioners of Georgia is once again trying to get the state's General Assembly to make it harder for Georgia's residents to keep up with what is going on in the governments they support.

Spousal abuse a serious problem

Kiss and make up

We thought that the management issues of the Nelson Heights Community Center had been solved last week. We commended the commissioners' actions on their decision to have the Recreation Department facilitate the center.

This facility, in our opinion, should fall under the direction and guidance of the Newton County Recreation Department - we said that last week and we maintain our position.

Grant writer granted

The Covington City Council made a wise decision in approving a grant writer position for the city. There is so much federal stimulus money floating around right now that it will take a fulltime employee to keep up with what is available and to complete the necessary paperwork.

We are not happy that the government has put the taxpayers of this country into so much debt to create these funds, but it is equally wrong for our community leaders not to try to capture them if they are available.

Way to go, sarge

We are all grateful for the actions taken by Newton County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Tommy Thompson while he was on patrol last week.

4-H Week

Today marks the end of National 4-H Week. Our local extension agent, Terri Kimble, has written three front page articles for us this week highlighting activities of Newton County's club.

Most children today would rather spend their time on the computer or play video games rather than taking care of animals or growing produce. However, Newton County has a vibrant 4-H Club.

Speak now or forever hold your peace

We are for taxpayers having their opinions heard at public meetings, in particular, meetings held to conduct city and county business.
