Our thoughts on passion

There is one person in town that we doubt that anyone who knows him could ever question his passion for the things he believes in.

Our thoughts on the Fourth of July

We are grateful that the long holiday weekend passed, and despite all the people and activities occurring with the Fourth of July festivities, there were no major reports of injuries associated with beverage consumption, firework exhibitions or rowdy behavior.

Our thoughts on outside vendors

We are never happy to see groups come into our community, especially on holidays, to set up shop for a week or two and sell products that rob profits from our local merchants who pay taxes on a regular basis.

OUr thoguhts: Celebrate your independence

Our thoughts: Fourth of July

"Our founders got it right when they wrote in the Declaration of Independence that our rights come from nature and nature's God, not from government."

Our thoughts on the runoff

During the recent primary election, many of Newton County's voters didn't show up. They paid no concern to who would represent them and a minority of the county's voters bothered to head toward the polls.

Our thoughts on the CRCT: Back to square one

The final year of CRCT scores for grades three-eight throughout the state were released this week. Did we score high or low? It seems like a little bit of both.

Our thoughts on the 250 Plan

Ten years ago a group of people got together, politicians and concerned citizens alike, and made a decision that Newton County, inevitably, was going to grow.

Guest editorial: As an American, what is worth defending?

As an American, I have the right to be a citizen of America. I have the right to make my own choices too. I also have the right to wake up and go to school and get an education. I get an education because we have freedom. Men and women give their lives every day to fight for our freedom.

Veterans make this country a better place to live. I only wish the veterans that died could see what they did for their country. Armed forces fight together to save and protect this country. These are reasons why I think ...

Thoughts on Ford Hood

In the United States the rule of law prevails. That means Nidal Malik Hasan will have his day in court. We can only hope that his trial won't become a media circus such as the O.J. Simpson trial of the 1990s.

If convicted, this beast needs swift justice.

Our thoughts... Bless our heroes

Wednesday we celebrate Veterans Day. Personally, we think this should be a major holiday right up there with Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

Our thoughts... Shown the door

U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey of Marietta and four other republicans introduced a bill this past week that would kick all members of Congress out of the federal employees' health plan and automatically enroll them into any public option program being drafted of any new health care reform plans.

Built to last

We talked with Wendell Crowe, owner of Covington Ford, this week and are glad we did. A story that Walgreens is interested in purchasing property owned by Crowe family has been circulating around town for a few weeks.

To date, nothing has been finalized. In the meantime, some long-time county residents have been speculating that Covington Ford is either going to move or close. According to Mr. Crowe, the rumor of Covington Ford closing is false, and if the Walgreens story becomes a reality, then Covington Ford would look to relocate in the area.

Winning seasons

We are also proud of our three local high school football teams. Alcovy wrapped up its first playoff berth last week. Eastside - whom many people gave up on this year - has rallied back not only to go on to the playoffs, but to win their division outright. And, we still have hopes that Newton High will be playoff bound, but if not, they to have had a great season too.

We admire the spirit and effort that each team has shown - from their coaches to the players, the band to the cheerleaders and the student bodies as a whole.

This year Mark Eskew will be back as Elvis. The food and auction items are always amazing.

Don't you forget it

We give full credit to County Commissioner J.C Henderson for his efforts in having the Nelson Heights Community Center built.

He should be pleased with his efforts to help his district, but he is not.

An ode to a wise son

I am not going to tell you how old he is because he might not want you to know. So, I will just tell you that on his birthday next week, the last number will have a "zero" behind it and he was born as Dwight Eisenhower was going out of office and John F. Kennedy was coming in. You can figure out the rest.
