Our Thoughts: Teacher of the year

Congratulations Kenneth Hanson. It's a great honor and great testament to your hard work that you were named Newton County School System's 2015 Teacher of the Year.

Our thoughts: Motion denied

At Tuesday's Board of Commissioners public meeting, Commissioner John Douglas made a motion to defund The Center for Community Preservation and Planning. Thank goodness there was no second, and this ill-conceived motion died.

Our Thoughts: Political correctness

It seems that over the last six years, we as a country have had to endure one scandal after another; distrust in any government entity is at the highest it has been in most of our lifetimes.

Our Thoughts: Thanks

Covington has a history of having some outstanding fire chiefs run its fire departments.

Our Thoughts: Honor

Dr. William Dobbs was not only a good man and a great, caring doctor, but he was also an honorable politician. It was the right thing for the City of Covington to honor the memory of this respected man, just four months after his death.

Our Thoughts: Manners

It's become common for Newton County residents to see roads blocked off with filming equipment and tents set up hosting production company personnel, or to turn on their televisions and see the Covington Historic Courthouse or other familiar homegrown sights.

Our Thoughts: Curfew

Because we have no place for teens to hang out with their friends, such as a movie theater or a bowling alley, many of our Newton County teenagers visit local cities like Conyers to spend time with friends.

Our Thoughts: Beauty

In spite of all the recent political upheaval in the county and the back-channel threats of more to come, Newton County is still a beautiful place to live.

Our thoughts: Manners

When you're paid by taxpayers, be nice to those taxpayers.

Our thoughts: The Square

Covington's Square Park, which has become world renown because of the movie industry that is attracted to its uniqueness, has recently been spruced up by the city of Covington. This valuable piece of earth has been one of the main reasons the city's tax base has remained fairly consistent when other municipalities have suffered loss of tax dollars.

Our Thoughts: Amazing

The Ray Rice incident is an example of what's wrong with our new American society in so many ways.

Our thoughts: Threats

Last week we ran a story that certain leaders of our large African-American community would call for a public march if their concerns about the Board of Commissioners' decision to strip Commissioner J.C. Henderson of many of his committee assignments was not properly addressed.

Our Thoughts: Too much

The congressman who represents most of us here in Newton County is Hank Johnson, who in reality is elected for us by the voters of DeKalb County, his home base.

Henderson did it to himself

No one can question the fact that there were a lot of fireworks at the last Newton County Board of Commissioners public meeting.

Our Thoughts... Nothin’ like ’em, nowhere

July is kind of a slow news month traditionally, and that's good for our staff to have a little break from the rush of everyday community life.

Kids are smarter than critics

OK, you Neal Boortz Kool-Aid drinkers (including those who wrote to defend your boy and couldn't even spell his name correctly), I have a few questions for you:

Ride for reading, prevention

The folks over at the Newton County Juvenile Court are also community heroes; they recognize that a court dispenses justice but in the case of juveniles it should dispense understanding solutions to that justice, and to that end they are volunteering to help the Ride For Reading bike ride to benefit the Learning Center.

Community spirit

We have on many occasions touted the value of volunteerism. Holly Cripps is an example of how one person who sees a need can make a difference.

Good enough for Wal-Mart

In case you had a doubt at all that the government-run health program being pushed by the Obama administration will not only be a financial drain for the taxpayers of this country as well as essentially destroy the free enterprise health system we currently enjoy, you need to be aware that the Wal-Mart corporation has come out in full support of the president's program. This is a company that has fought for years against offering its employees fair and valuable health benefits and only provides them today because of the threat of unionization of its employees.

What a world

It's amazing to us that city of Los Angeles, which has a budget shortfall of $5 billion, is going to spend a minimum of $2.5 million to facilitate the extravagant funeral of a man who did nothing but waste money on himself.

It certainly is a an amazing world in which we live.

Taking a DARE

The D.A.R.E. program, which was established in 1983, has been successful in helping communities across the nation educate young people on the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

Because of tight budgets across the country, the program has been cut in a great deal of communities and also has lost its effectiveness.

Phone Perdue please

Judge Sammy Ozburn has made the final cut and is on the governor's short list for the vacant Georgia Supreme Court post. We suggest that if you agree with us in thinking Judge Ozburn will make an excellent justice, then you should drop the governor a line in the next two weeks and tell him your thoughts about our judge.

The governor can be reached at http://gov.georgia.gov.

Citizen of the year

Tom Turner moved to Oxford nine years ago in order to get away from the snowy winter of New York.

He must have saved a lot of energy not having to shovel that snow because he has put it to good use in his adopted city of Oxford.

It takes a village

Heaps of praise goes to the little cities of Porterdale and Social Circle for the first class fireworks displays that both communities hosted last Saturday.

It shows that these types of celebrations can be held with the cooperation of local business and local donors.

New civic leaders

We are fortunate to have a large group of non-profit and civic groups here in Newton County and in Social Circle.

Dangerous teens

We don't know what's going on here; it seems like every day we are publishing stories of our younger people killing each other, being arrested for drug abuse and carelessly leaving children in hot parked cars.

There are reports coming in that teenagers are roaming around quiet scenic roads in our county, in broad daylight, throwing full jars of mustard and ketchup into unsuspecting passing cars.

We need news other than MJ

Last week pop icon Michael Jackson died. A possible cause of his untimely death has been linked to an alleged misuse of pain killers.

Declaration of hope

Tomorrow, as a community and with our nation, we celebrate the 233rd year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence from England. In honor of that day and for the courage undertaken by 40 brave men, on page 4A we are running a copy of this great masterpiece.
