A very special Mother's Day

There is one thing that is as certain as anything can be - that our mothers, whether we are close to them or not, will always have a special place in our hearts.

Rotary Day

For 76 years a local civic group has been involved, through its monies and volunteerism, in almost every worthwhile project that has helped Covington and Newton County become the great place that it is to raise a family.

Hometown Hero

For the last six years we have had the honor to recognize people in our community who through their actions and deeds have gone the extra mile to help their neighbors or their family.

Our thoughts: Newton can be a model

There is no question that we are suffering from a general lack of quality leadership in Newton County at this time. Can that be turned around? We think so, but it is going to take our current leadership to be willing to communicate and cooperate with other community officials to start the process.

Easter is early this year and that is appropriate because the renewal of the earth's splendor has also arrived early.

Charting a new course

Sunday's edition contained a special section detailing ways the city of Covington and Newton County were working their way out of the current recession. Unfortunately, in the same edition we published a front page story about the failure of McIntosh Bank.

While the bank's failure was more bad news about our local economy, we were pleased to find that CharterBank out of West Point had taken over control of McIntosh's assets and comforted that the Federal Deposit Insurance Agency was protecting McIntosh's customers.

NMC stays ahead

We are more than pleased in these very hard economic times - and with the uncertainty of the fallout from the recently passed Health bill - that our local hospital is still thinking and planning for the future needs of our community.

Our thoughts...Stepping on city, county rights

Last week we stated that we were opposed to the efforts of Rep. Doug Holt to introduce a bill that would allow the state of Georgia to interfere with the decisions of local communities in regards to land issues, specifically Newton County and Social Circle.

The state should not be in the business of annexing or de-annexing land from one municipality in order to give to another municipality, all because of the whims of some elected official.

Our thoughts...Menace to society

During the last two weeks there have been two tragic incidents involving stalking that have resulted in the loss of life.

Last week a beautiful, vivacious young woman - Audrey Atkinson - was gunned down unmercifully by a jilted boyfriend, who later took his own life. The death of the couple leaves their toddler son an orphan.

Revitalizing a community

A year ago we rode through the Walker's Bend subdivision off Ga. Highway 81. At best, it was a sad sight to behold with home after empty home.

We had visions of it turning into a community of eyesores as empty houses were starting to fray badly.

Our thoughts...Tell us something we don't know

We are pleased to note that the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission, a 12-county planning group that has been working on a year 2035 plan, has recognized the fact that Newton County is a great place to live as it is filled with natural resources and historic areas.

Of course, those of us that live here have known that all along.
