Our thoughts: The Square

Covington's Square Park, which has become world renown because of the movie industry that is attracted to its uniqueness, has recently been spruced up by the city of Covington. This valuable piece of earth has been one of the main reasons the city's tax base has remained fairly consistent when other municipalities have suffered loss of tax dollars.

Our thoughts: Threats

Last week we ran a story that certain leaders of our large African-American community would call for a public march if their concerns about the Board of Commissioners' decision to strip Commissioner J.C. Henderson of many of his committee assignments was not properly addressed.

Our Thoughts: Too much

The congressman who represents most of us here in Newton County is Hank Johnson, who in reality is elected for us by the voters of DeKalb County, his home base.

Courage and change

"In whatever arena of life one may meet the challenge of courage, whatever may be the sacrifices he faces if he follows his conscience – the loss of his friends, his fortune, his contentment, even the esteem of his fellow men – each man must decide for himself the course he will follow."

Our Thoughts: Mansfield

The Newton county town of Mansfield has always been a charming little place that most people just drive through on their way to somewhere else.

Leadership still lacking

Two weeks ago we editorialized that the Newton County Board of Commissioners should show some leadership, define the county's form of government, and identify its true manager. The BOC held a workshop on the topic, but left the meeting without a solution, or even clarity on how Newton County should be led.

Recommendations to the BOC

Good decisions made for 2050

We believe Tuesday's Board of Commissioners meeting was the most critical in recent memory, and we applaud the commissioners for their efforts.

The inauguration, budget proposals

The General Assembly was in recess this past week as some legislators traveled to Washington for the inauguration of our new president and then from Wednesday to Friday as many of us attended the annual state budget hearings.

Porterdale paradox

By now, we should not be surprised by the goings on at Porterdale City Council meetings. At Jan. 13's work session City Manager Tom Fox warned the council about future budget shortfalls if more expenses were not cut or if revenue did not increase. He further pointed out to the council that the 2010 shortfall was the equivalent of the salaries of five full-time employees.

After all of that doom and gloom, plus much more, the council told Fox to put merit raises for eight city employees on the consent agenda for the February meeting.

Our thoughts... In his own words

In our opinion one of the greatest Southern humorists of all time was Lewis Grizzard.

He loved Georgia and especially the University of Georgia. In his short life - he was only 48 when he died of heart complications he authored 25 books, thousands of columns and was the sports editor of the Atlanta journal by age 23.

Our thoughts...A new beginning

This is a week of excitement, of change, of new beginnings. We celebrate the peaceful exchange of power. We place the hopes of our future and our children's future on the shoulders of an untried new leader, but a leader who is filled with enthusiasm and optimism.

Support in tough times

We are sad to see the Goody's store here in Covington close. It has been a mainstay of local shopping for years.

Not only is this a loss for local consumers, but also it is a major loss of tax revenue for local government.

Impressive leader

We had the opportunity to visit with Dr. Roderick Sams the principal of Newton High School this week. For those of you who have not had an opportunity to meet Dr. Sams we encourage you to do so.

We continue to think he is a breath of fresh air in the education system and will be the change agent that Newton High needs. We also took a tour of the school and it was refreshing to see a clean environment and happy smiling faces of students, who showed respect and discipline.

In addition to celebrating the peaceful transition of our presidency and celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this past week, our community took the time to honor some of our outstanding residents.

First, Doug Bolton and the Rev. Willie J. Smith were honored with the prestigious "I Have a Dream Award."
