Welch: CPA week 6 – Shots Fired

Week 6 of the Porterdale Police Department's (PPD) Citizen's Police Academy (CPA) gave the class the chance to see, handle and fire some of the same weapons used by the PPD. While shooting at paper targets in a controlled environment doesn't compare to being on the street involved in a violent confrontation, the class learned that even if the calmest of circumstances, concentration is necessary to hit a target.

Bouchillon: There's no reason to vote 'no' to SPLOST

Last fall, the Newton County Board of Commissioners (BOC) appointed a 23-person citizens' committee to hear information about potential SPLOST projects. The committee was charged with making a recommendation of which projects to fund and how to allocate the county's $50 million share of SPLOST to those projects. The committee held six public meetings, during which it gathered information, prioritized projects, and voted on amounts to fund the projects. The information was then given to the BOC for it to review and make the final list to be included in the referendum. The BOC voted on that list in ...

Bouchillon: What SPLOST is and isn't good for

There are some expenditures just too large to include in a General Fund budget. The cost of maintaining and improving the roads is one example. The state offers a 2:1 match for dollars the county brings to the table, but the county has to have money to match state dollars. So the county can leverage those SPLOST dollars, essentially turning each dollar into about three. Getting a two to one return on our SPLOST dollar investment is highly desirable if it were a stock, I think we would all buy it!

Welch: CPA week 3: The heroes we never see

We have all been there. Faced with an emergency situation, we pick up our phone and dial 9-1-1. We impatiently stand by waiting for the fire truck, ambulance or police car to arrive. We probably even fume that it's taking so long for them to get there when in reality it only takes six or seven minutes.

Welch: Learning what cops do

With much respect for the contributions and sacrifices made by the military, there's also another group of heroes who work daily to protect ourway of life. They pin on badges, strap on Glocks and climb into cars and SUVs with blue lights on top for a living. They are cops. Without our system of jurisprudence and those tasked with enforcing it, life would be vastly different for all of us.
