Salem/Wildcats agreement on hold, “Back to School Jamboree” cancelled

According to Cindy Ball, executive director of information and community relations of Rockdale County public schools, the previously reported agreement between Salem and the Wildcats has not yet been finalized despite the press release stating that an agreement was finalized.

Wildcats to call Salem home

Update: An agreement has not yet been finalized that Salem High School will be the new home venue of the Atlanta Wildcats for the 2014-2015 season, which starts in November.

A’s season ends at regionals

All good things must come to an end, and end they did for the Covington Post No. 32 A's as they exited the American Legion Southeast Regional Tournament much earlier than anticipated. Post No. 32 traveled to Asheboro, North Carolina with high hopes of a strong showing, but a pair of losses sent them packing and they were headed back to Covington by day two of the tournament.

Henderson wins at NBHA Championships

Sydney Henderson, 12, of Covington won the 2014 National Barrel Horse Association Youth (NBHA) World Championships fourth division in Perry, Georgia that were held between July 19 - 26.

Post 32 wins state championship

Before the American Legion baseball season even started, coach Bill Dallas had stated that one of his goals for the Covington Post No. 32 A's was to win the Georgia State Championship. Dallas and his team did just that over the weekend by defeating Albany Post No. 30 by a score of 8-3 in the championship game that was contested on Monday morning.

Unyielding to cancer

According to costprojections.cancer.gov 2010 study, the average annual cost for males with brain cancer is $115,250 and the average annual cost for a female with breast cancer is $108,168. Crossfit Unyielding is hosting an event, 'Unyielding to Cancer,' for two friends, Lisa Baker who has stage three breast cancer and Hank Dunn who is terminally ill with stage four brain cancer.

Miracle League Complex delayed

Newton County's first Miracle League complex has experienced a plethora of delays, and the grand opening originally set for the fall of 2014 will be delayed until January 2015. Although Miracle League consultant, Tamara Richardson, is still keeping her fingers crossed for a fall 2014 grand opening. The artificial turf was put down last week. If the Miracle League manages to keep its grand opening of January 2015, registration would begin in the spring. NHS to honor '65 R.L. Cousins team

The 1965 R.L. Cousins basketball team has enjoyed a historical revival during the past year. With the rehabilitation and subsequent reopening of Wolverine Gym for use by the Newton Recreation Commission to the court dedication in honor of Jimmy Wright earlier this month, the Wolverines are finally getting the recognition they deserved more than 45 years ago. It will culminate Jan. 31 when Newton's basketball program honors the team next to its own in the rafters with a state runner-up banner ceremony.

Bad Boys win Triple Crown Fall State Championship

After their second place finish at South Carolina's Super NIT, Mayhem Bad Boys traveled this past weekend to Georgia's baseball Mecca East Cobb for the Triple Crown Fall State Championship. Bad Boys drew two Carolina teams in pool play, Carolina Stars and Upstate Drive. Mayhem split 1-1 beating Carolina Stars 4-1 which started out as a tough pitching duel against Mayhem's lefty Christian Davis and Stars' lefty who held the Bad Boys hitless for three innings. Cheerful day

The Newton County Recreation Commission held its annual cheerleading competition Saturday at Alcovy High School. Four division champions were crowned. The Bulldogs took the Training League title, edging out a spirited effort from the Tide while the Seminoles captured the Division 1 championship in the second event of the day. In Division 2 it was the group representing the LSU Tigers that took home the first-place trophy, staving off a fierce challenge from the Gators. Local travel team takes second at South Carolina tournament

The 10-under Mayhem Bad Boys baseball team made a statement this past weekend at South Carolina USSSA Super National Invitational Tournament with second place finish. A strong field of 19 teams from North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina all competed for a guaranteed bid to next year's Elite 32 at Disney's Wide World of Sports in July. NCRC swaps Dixie Youth for Little League

Three Newton County All-Star teams trekked south with eyes on making it to the Dixie Youth World Series Saturday but it wasn't meant to be. The Newton County American minor team (9-10 year olds) rolled through its early opposition and had a chance to advance to the best-of-three finals with a win over Winder. They defeated Winder 3-0 Tuesday in the blue bracket double-elimination tournament in Leesburg. Instead, Winder bounced back to beat Newton American 9-5 and 9-8.
