Recreation kicks off baseball season

Despite the wet weather Saturday morning, the Newton County Recreation Commission ushered in a new season of recreation baseball at City Pond Park, treating players and fans with a full day of baseball action at the park.

NCRC swaps Dixie Youth for Little League

The Newton County Recreation Commission announced Tuesday it's changing up part of its youth baseball program. Beginning next season, the NCRC will be affiliated with Little League and will no longer be a part of Dixie Youth.

Newton All-Stars knocked out of state tourneys

Three Newton County All-Star teams trekked south with eyes on making it to the Dixie Youth World Series Saturday but it wasn't meant to be. The Newton County American minor team (9-10 year olds) rolled through its early opposition and had a chance to advance to the best-of-three finals with a win over Winder. They defeated Winder 3-0 Tuesday in the blue bracket double-elimination tournament in Leesburg. Instead, Winder bounced back to beat Newton American 9-5 and 9-8.

Need for speed

A little – OK, a lot of heat didn't keep a solid group of die-hard cyclists from showcasing their skills Saturday. Riders from around Georgia and beyond converged on the square to race through the streets of Covington in the criterium races of the Georgia Cycling Gran Prix.

It's been a while but Newton County has a state baseball champion. The 13-year old Newton County All-Star captured the Junior Dixie Boys state title Tuesday with a 23-9 win over West Georgia White in Columbus and will represent Georgia in the Dixie Boys World Series.

The 13-under Newton County All-Star captured the Junior Dixie Boys state title Tuesday with a 23-9 win over West Georgia White in Columbus and will represent Georgia in the Dixie Boys World Series. Newton County won its opening games 10-9 and 10-6 on Saturday and Sunday respectively in the double-elimination tournament.

I Spy Museum

The Summer Music & Art Camps I Spy Museum is proud to partner with the Newton County Recreation Commission for a summer of fun.

Supervised and taught by owners Jeff and Angie Johnson, the camp is only $69. Dates are June 8-9, June 22-24, June 29-July 1, July 20-22, and July 27-29. All camps run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
