The Covington Family YMCA capped off their summer camp schedule with their annual cheerleading camp this past week. The camp ran from Monday to Thursday, with 12 girls learning a mini competition routine during the first three days and putting on a performance in front of parents on the final day.
In a 10-minute span, Jabari Bennett said hello to about 10 children passing through while he sat underneath the pavilion at the YMCA outdoor facility on Stone Road. Everyone knew his name, which is a tell-tale sign that he is a major part of this community.
In an effort to keep kids active and introduce some to the game of soccer, the Covington Family YMCA started its first summer soccer league this year, which is held at their outdoor facility on Stone Road.
Blake Hammock of Jonesboro, Georgia was a local legend around town. Hammock, former standout running back for Piedmont Academy, was a great player. He helped lift Piedmont to its first state championship in 2010 and accounted for over 50 touchdowns before graduating in 2011 and continuing his education at Valdosta State University.
Robert H. Stanfield of Covington will receive the YMCA of metro Atlanta's 2014 Volunteer of the Year Award after serving on the board of the Covington Family YMCA for a number of years. He will be honored at the annual volunteer recognition dinner Monday, Nov.10.
The Rockdale Riptides have six swimmers who have qualified to swim in individual events at the 2014 Georgia Swimming 14 & Under Long Course Championships that will be held July 16-19 at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
