Foiled again

Lady Rams cruise to 2-0 in region play

Newton's girls are off to their best start in six years after a 61-40 win over Langston Hughes Friday. Their win moved them to 2-0 in Region 2-AAAAA and 3-1, equaling their start to the 2006-07 – the season first under head coach Tiffani Johnson.

Who's got next?

For the past two seasons, no team has been better in the county - in its region for that matter, than Newton's boys. The Rams are the reigning two-time Region 2-AAAAA champions and compiled a 33-1 region record since 2009. In short, they've been atop the mountain for a while. But things will look a lot different this year.

Rams top Westlake, pick up first region win

Newton finally earned its first region win while snapping its four-game losing streak Saturday with a 35-14 win over Westlake. The Rams forced five turnovers and the offense had its most complete game of the season in the process.

She's got game

Newton basketball has a rich tradition. The boys' team won the state championship in 1964 and legendary coach Ron Bradley guided his team to a state-record 129-game home winning streak spanning a nine-year period. More recently, the Rams have won two region championships and made it to the Class AAAAA Final Four in 2010.

Newton out after Lowndes sweep

VALDOSTA - The Vikettes swept Newton in the first round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs on Wednesday at the Morris-Coats Field of Dreams. They beat Newton 6-1 in the first game and 9-1 in the second.

For openers

Two of the three county softball teams made the postseason after earning one of the four available slots in their respective region tournaments. Newton travels to Valdosta to play Region 1-AAAAA champion Lowndes while Eastside opens up the Class AAA playoffs hosting Harlem.
