Newton adds 3 to 2015 signing class

We all know the saying "the rich get richer," and that seems to apply to the Newton Rams football program. After an historic Elite Eight run, Newton was able to celebrate all the hard work that was put in this entire season. On top of that, National Signing Day, back in February, was a busy day for the Rams as nine players signed their letter of intent to play football at the next level. Within the last few weeks, that number has risen to 12 as three more players signed for the Rams.

Cherished

"He had [lost] so much blood, and they say he broke every bone in his face and fractured his skull. It was so much blood and swelling that the CT scan wasn't giving them the reading that they needed. The body didn't look like anything was wrong with it. It was just his head," says Tracy Betts, Carlvon Betts' mother, recalling her son's fatal car accident. "They took him and decided to get the bleeding to stop. At that point he was bleeding out of his ears, out of his nose, his mouth...everything. It wasn't ...

Honoring the fallen

There was a sense of hope in the air when the Lady Rams took on the Lady Spartans of North Springs on Thursday evening. A moment of silence for fallen Ram, Carlvon Betts, before the game filled the stadium with a melancholy atmosphere, but it fueled Newton to a 2-1 win over North Springs.

The Newton way

The Rams' state playoff run stopped on a cold Thursday night at Wheeler High School, with a large number of Newton fans tucked inside Wheeler's gym hoping to see the Newton boys basketball team pull of yet another upset. Three days later and the buzz has died, but the players and head coach Rick Rasmussen will always know how it all came together.

Cold bats give Newton its third loss

Even with the winter weather we experienced this past week, spring sports are off and running in full affect. The Newton High School baseball team has already got into the middle of their non-region schedule. Due to several rain-outs, Newton had only played two games until Friday evening where they were looking to get a win over the MLK Lions. Going into the game 0-2, Newton needed this win to kick start the season, but couldn't get it done and fell 8-4 to the Lions.

There is a game for juniors and one for seniors. Rams' guard D.J. Hill was also named as an alternate, but it has not yet been announced if he'll play in the game.

Fallout

The third time wasn't the charm for Newton (22-9, 5-5 Region 2-AAAAAA), a team that had been on a wild Cinderella run in the state playoffs with upsets over powerhouse Tift County and Dacula. The favorites to win it all in 6-AAAAAA, Wheeler (28-2) and No. 2 player in the nation Jaylen Brown, ended the Rams' season with a 72-54 win.

Rams’ run ends

Man, what a run it was. Newton played the underdog three times in the state playoffs, first upsetting Tift County – originally a favorite to at least make the elite eight – then beating Dacula in the sweet sixteen. However, Newton couldn't best Wheeler in the elite eight and fell to the Wildcats 72-54.

Newton against the WORLD

No. Way. There was no way Newton would go down and beat defending Region 2-AAAAAA state champion Tift County as a No. 4 seed, versus the second-ranked team in the state. Not in Tift. Not a team that was 26-1, undefeated in their region and hadn't lost a game since January 8.

Play 13: Newton vs Central Gwinnett

All the talk has died down now. Newton football was named Fox 5's team of the week on Thursday and has drawn plenty of media attention the past week for its victory over Valdosta. None of that matters tonight when the Rams take on Central Gwinnett at 7:30 at Sharp Stadium.

Newton owns Heritage in season opener

If cheering was the contest that counted then Heritage was easily the victor, but it didn't. Neither did the many entertaining dance-offs between the fans of the two schools, but what did count was the Ws for both the girls' and boys' varsity basketball teams.

VALDOSTA WHO?

Play 12. That's been the goal all year for the Newton Rams. You see, playing 12 games in high school football means that you've won a first round state playoff game, something Newton hasn't done, ever. The Rams won two region playoff games in 1987, but region playoffs were eliminated in 1994 and Newton has never won a state playoff game. Until now.

Game Analysis: Newton vs rockdale

The game of the season between two rivals ended in classic fashion. Newton took the game and the county championship crown in a thrilling 29-26 victory. Rockdale played great, the Bulldogs led for most of the game, but it was Newton's final drive that drove the nail in the coffin. Here's some takeaways from the game.

Rams rise above Rockdale

The game was all but over. Rockdale was nine yards away from the endzone and led Newton 26-21 with just over five minutes to go. On third and nine Steven Montac jumped a route and intercepted a Zuri Minnifield pass and the Rams were back in business at their own five-yard line.

The history of Sharp Stadium

In April 1956, Homer Sharp, principal of Newton County High School, proposed an idea for an athletic field for the school's sport activities. A month later, that athletic field came into action as the county's board of education approved the proposal. Due to the help of the citizens in the community, the stadium was opened on September 21, 1956. It was named after Homer Sharp, because of his hard-work and passion to get the field done. Since then, the field has been used for high school sporting events, recreational uses and graduation ceremonies.

Year one

Speaking to head coach Ashley Coles after her team became the runner up in region 2-AAAAAA, she was confident her team could advance to the second round. Those expectations, although they were not met were very realistic. The Lady Rams came into the first round with an 13-15 record and Tift came into the matchup with an 11-17 record. After Tift's sweep against Newton the two teams finished with identical records. Coles recaps her first year as head coach and speaks on the future of the program in this Q&A.
