The Newton Rams won their region opener, while grabbing their second win of the season, against the Alcovy Tigers on Friday night 17-14 at Sharp Stadium, spoiling the Tigers' hopes of obtaining the Newton Cup.
While its 1-3 record may not be what the Newton High varsity football team would like to carry into Sharp Stadium Friday night, a new season for the Rams begins as they take on rival Alcovy in their first region game of the season.
The Lady Rams 1963 regional champion and state runner-up varsity basketball team reunited this past weekend, celebrating their 33-1 overall record. Members of the region championship team include, first row: Sandra Lester Needham, Day Morcock Kennon, Betty Jaynes, Rosemary Laster Powell and Lynda Satterfield LaFollette. Second row: Diane Carter Dickson, Donna Dooley Tomlin and Ameila Spillers Moseley. Third row: Carlyn Maloy McConnell, Kay Shaw Coggin, Carolyn Strange Ariail and Susan Cooper Wilson.
Freshman starting pitcher Maddie Cronic threw a no-hitter for the Newton Lady Rams on Senior Night, as the varsity softball team ended their regular season Thursday night with a 12-0 win over the Lovejoy Wildcats.
