Rams show promise, game cancelled

For the second week in a row, Newton's game got cancelled after almost one full quarter of play against Westlake. This game was supposed to be the one to test Newton, and see if its two wins weren't just wins because they were against weak competition. Although there was only a small sample size to judge from, as neither coach had the benefit of a halftime or end of a quarter to make adjustments, it was enough to see that the Rams are special. It was enough to make one believe that they can go down to Lowndes ...

Homecoming

There is a saying, 'the best defense is a good offense,' but there's another saying 'defense wins a championships.' Newton (2-0, Region 2-AAAAAA) subscribes more to the mantra of having a good offense, and Westlake (2-1, Region 3-AAAAAA) is more of a defensive juggernaut.

Rams live and die with Johnson

After scoring a combined 111 points in just two games to start the season, it's safe to say Newton's high-powered offense is going to be tough to stop. It's also probably safe to say that Newton will live and die on the shoulders – and the legs – of junior quarterback Romario Johnson.

No play? No way

At some point, someone has to be held accountable for officiating mistakes in high school games. It's gone on too long. Each year, whether it's baseball, basketball, softball or football, amateur referees tasked to officiate high school games in Georgia continue to make mistakes but won't own up to them. Something has to give.

Wild Ram win

In what can only be described as a contentious final two minutes of Friday's Eastside-Newton game, The Eagles had the game won twice in the matter of seconds only to see watch the Rams steal the game on a late touchdown.

Collision course

Three years ago, Newton held the ball against Eastside the entire fourth quarter only to score the tying touchdown on fourth down with seconds remaining. A spirited overtime saw the Eagles hold on for the win after a critical stop on a two-point conversion. That epic matchup went down as the best game between the two rival schools to date. It was also the last time Eastside beat Newton.

Rams need work but are on the right path

Newton is a work in progress. Really you can say that about every high school football team. Seldom does a team hit the ground running and look playoff ready in week one let alone the preseason. And after watching the Rams play Rockdale Friday, it's clear they have a lot of work to do. The good news is they have a lot to work with. That and their defense would have scored 26 fantasy football points.

Runnin' roughshod

Friday night's matchup between Rockdale and Newton was just a preseason tuneup, which is fortunate for the morale of the Bulldogs.

Final tune up

Newton and Alcovy softball hit the diamond Tuesday for the only time this season against each other in a scrimmage before both teams open regular-season play Friday. The Lady Tigers will play in a tournament at South Gwinnett while Newton plays at Griffin in the Diamond Classic. Both teams had similar agendas - work out some bugs and see what needs work.

Justice is served

Former Newton defensive end Justice Ejike was the unequivocal leader of the Rams defense in 2009. He was their best player on that side of the ball. He was so good, he also played offensive line. Fast forward two years and he has a new role, one he isn't too familiar with.

A fresh start

With the softball season set to begin next week, Newton has a renewed focus going into the 2011 campaign. After a tough year that saw the Lady Rams go 5-5 in region play but 11-18 overall, they turn the page and look to get back to the basics.
