Playoffs?

With just two games left for most teams and one game for others, the playoff race is in the final lap and the teams are headed toward the finish line. Some teams fare better than others, but every Newton County high school football team has a shot at making it to the big dance. Here are the current playoff implications for each team. (Note: this was written before Newton's game against Lovejoy).

Year one

Speaking to head coach Ashley Coles after her team became the runner up in region 2-AAAAAA, she was confident her team could advance to the second round. Those expectations, although they were not met were very realistic. The Lady Rams came into the first round with an 13-15 record and Tift came into the matchup with an 11-17 record. After Tift's sweep against Newton the two teams finished with identical records. Coles recaps her first year as head coach and speaks on the future of the program in this Q&A.

Game analysis: Finding gems

Without two of their usual starters, senior receiver Davonta Jones and defensive back Steven Montac, the Rams were able to fend off a scrappy Alcovy team and cruise to a 33-7 victory. Within the game Newton was able to realize the depth it has at quarterback and at running back. The Tigers saw that they're not without promise on defense and that turnovers are still a problem.

Newton Rams' offense: Read & react

Romario Johnson looks off to the sideline as the rest of the offense gets set. The coaches are signaling to Johnson with an array of arm movements, not a play but a playlist. In Rams' coach Terrance Banks' spread offense the quarterback is the key to the offense's success. Johnson gets the options from the coaches, and it's up to him to read the defense's coverage and choose the best play.

Outmatched

The saying goes numbers never lie, that saying is inaccurate. Numbers won't necessarily lie, but they won't tell you the full story.

She's got game

Newton basketball has a rich tradition. The boys' team won the state championship in 1964 and legendary coach Ron Bradley guided his team to a state-record 129-game home winning streak spanning a nine-year period. More recently, the Rams have won two region championships and made it to the Class AAAAA Final Four in 2010.

Rams fall to Newnan 21-7 for first loss

Newton's bid to take down Newnan and open the season 4-0 for a second straight season never really got going Saturday. Poor field position, penalties and three turnovers sunk the Rams and it was the Cougars who avenged last year's stunning loss with a 21-7 win.

No play? No way

At some point, someone has to be held accountable for officiating mistakes in high school games. It's gone on too long. Each year, whether it's baseball, basketball, softball or football, amateur referees tasked to officiate high school games in Georgia continue to make mistakes but won't own up to them. Something has to give.

Wild Ram win

In what can only be described as a contentious final two minutes of Friday's Eastside-Newton game, The Eagles had the game won twice in the matter of seconds only to see watch the Rams steal the game on a late touchdown.

Collision course

Three years ago, Newton held the ball against Eastside the entire fourth quarter only to score the tying touchdown on fourth down with seconds remaining. A spirited overtime saw the Eagles hold on for the win after a critical stop on a two-point conversion. That epic matchup went down as the best game between the two rival schools to date. It was also the last time Eastside beat Newton.

Rams need work but are on the right path

Newton is a work in progress. Really you can say that about every high school football team. Seldom does a team hit the ground running and look playoff ready in week one let alone the preseason. And after watching the Rams play Rockdale Friday, it's clear they have a lot of work to do. The good news is they have a lot to work with. That and their defense would have scored 26 fantasy football points.

Runnin' roughshod

Friday night's matchup between Rockdale and Newton was just a preseason tuneup, which is fortunate for the morale of the Bulldogs.
