Hometown HEROES

In the far northeast corner of Georgia, bordering the South Carolina line and more than 80 miles away from Newton/Rockdale County lies a small place called Elbert County with a of population 20,500 people as of 2012, according to elbertco.net. Elbert is significant to Newton and Rockdale because of the two coaches it birthed - Jonathan Brewer (Rockdale County High School head baseball coach) and Bruce Evans (Eastside High School head baseball coach) - and the men that it made them.

Mission accomplished

On Wednesday Eastside football coach, Rick Hurst confirmed that he had accepted the head coaching job at Pepperell High School. Hurst has been a coach for 21 years, having spent 10 of those years at Eastside, which some may consider a lifetime for high school football coach.

Hurst leaving Eastside

According to the Rome News-Tribune Eastside head football coach Rick Hurst has been named to the same position at Pepperell High School. Hurst will finish out the school year at Eastside and will begin his tenure Pepperell at the end of the school year.

The Eastside Lady Eagles defeated Mt Zion 10-0 in a time shortened match Wednesday night at Sharp Stadium. Junior Morgan Green scored 2 goals in the first 8 minutes of the game and went on to assist on 3 more.

Eastside/Newton alumni game set for May

The annual Newton vs Eastside Alumni Basketball Game will be held on May 16, 2015. If anyone is interested, please sign up now. There also may be a softball game on July 19 depending on the interest of both schools' alumni. It will be $20 to play one sport or $30 to play both.
